Troy Directors Cut

I’ve always had a guilty pleasure for this movie even though it’s a C movie. But the Directors Cut ain’t bad. It’s not a Kingdom of Heaven level improvement, but I’d say it makes it a B.
My major gripe has always been Brad Pitt. Dude is yoked up physically and is perfect for the image of Achilles but he is so miscast. I’ve never been able to figure out what he’s going for, some odd accented overacted caracature of an old hero.
Crowe, Bale, Viggo, hell Mel Gibson would’ve made for better Achilles.
Everyone else is perfectly cast, but Pitt ruins it.
Bryan Cox is perfect, Gleason is great, Bloom plays a great pussy.
That said, the DC is a much better move than the theatrical. A few more added seconds of Kruger being nude makes it worth it

Orlando Bloom was such a little bitch in this movie that I’m kind of impressed how much they made me hate him. He’s the obvious villain in this film.

Well, he's supposed to be. He's Paris.
This movie is vastly underrated. They tried to be faithful to the legend, oral history, one of the first novels.... So to speak.
I think they nailed casting. Helen of Troy was a proper choice. Pitt played
infantile, brooding Achilles great as the egomaniac (Crowe would not have come off as a Greek God but just another warrior who plucky)....Bloom is a bitch but that's the story....he's described as "cowardly" and Hector was portrayed astonishingly well as the hero who knows he's not a Greek God but fights to the end. Overall, the movie did about as well as you can do for an Antiquities piece.

I didn't mind Pitt's portrayal - i though it was pretty well done, not perfect, but as Mizzou stated:
Brian Cox was damn good in that - made me a lifelong fan of his work in film/tv

Super Troopers was his magnum opus.

Super Troopers, Red and Red 2 are my fav's of his.
and i think we can all agree - Bloom needed to die.

For whatever reason, this movie latched on to me when I first saw it in jr high. Probably Diane. Yeh...definitely Diane.
But seriously, I loved this movie. My adult eyes can see imperfections, but I still love it and will watch it over and over.

And that is why no one will remember your name

I’m with you on liking this movie and also on Pitts acting being off.
Like everyone else I’ve read the Illiad, Achilles is definitely supposed to be in it for himself and not really unified with other Greeks, but he’s still supposed to like fighting. The way he was portrayed in this was almost like he didn’t want to fight and thought it was annoying, like he would rather be the commander making the call and not the guy executing the plan. Thats not how I saw him in the story, he’s aloof, brooding, and childish, but he likes fighting. Hell he’s only there to go out fighting and become a hero. I know he pulls his soldiers and refuses to fight out of spite, but Pitts portrayal as a guy who was only ever fighting reluctantly just didn’t quite work IMO
Eta: and yes this movie made me hate Orlando Bloom forever

Brian Cox as Hannibal Lecter in Manhunter(1986) was 2nd to Super Troopers on his great roles

Eric Bana was great in this.

much like many movies i watched on TBS, TNT, or USA as a teenager/20 YO, I accidentally watched this one with the kids not knowing that there was nudity and my wife was unhappy.
i just remember the PG13 version in theaters.

He had his Myrmidons take over the beach all by themselves, that doesn't really strike me as someone who fights reluctantly.

If we ever meet in person it will go down like this scene
The movie is perfect

Seems like you’re contradicting yourself.
Movie Achilles loved fighting but required glory, honor and respect for it. He was only reluctant when he was being denied that by Agamemnon.
I think some of the acting being off was mostly the lines being clunky or trying to depict an ancient demigod (or whatever he was).
Posted on 2/10/25 at 4:33 pm to Tiger1242
I just read his portrayal as being willing to fight, but not under Agamemnon's direction. it was like he was openly displaying his disdain for him.
ETA - Havoc nailed it better than me

He understood the assignment and gave my favorite performance in the movie.
Also…I don’t think there has ever been a hotter Helen of Troy on film than the one we got with Diane Kruger in Troy.
