Need help from the truck experts of the OT

I drive a 2011 V6 Tacoma. Yesterday I noticed a humming sound when I started it up. The pitch went higher when I stepped on the gas. It’s more noticeable when I idle at a light. The same thing happened today on my way to work. I’m fearing the worst. Any ideas?

My dad would say "don't start it up and step on the gas and it won't do that anymore".

It’s your wife in the passenger seat talking about her day

Don't chip your nail polish trying to open the hood. bring it to a mechanic to check it out.

Some kind of belt tensioner or idler pulley is wearing out maybe.
Pop the hood - is it coming from the front of the engine?

Or AC compressor...
OP, it could be as simple as a worn belt.
If you feel confident, let the truck idle and put a bar of soap against the belts.
Watch your hands, but it isnt that dangerous.
If noise goes away or lessens, change belts.

My guess would be a pulley /belt issue. Best to get it checked out now. It may be a fairly simple issue that if addressed now will not be an expensive repair. But, if you don’t address it, it could very well turn into an expensive repair sooner or later.

Sounds like a belt is wearing out.

Could be the timing belts are worn out. Do you hear any ticking coming from the engine under acceleration?
You first need to rule out other things such as the alternator, drive belt, etc. However after that, if you still can't get it figured out, bring it to a mechanic. You DO NOT want the timing belts to break. 14 year old engine, it might be time to replace them.

secondary air injection pump is a common problem w Toyotas. An after market bypass of the smog pump is the cheapest option.
