What's living in Corpus like?

I have a job possibility in Corpus Christi. I haven't been there in over 20 years and that was just for a weekend. Don't remember much about it.
Anyone live there now or recently or have family there?
In regard to other Texas cities, I have lived all over Houston metro, Bryan/College Station and San Antonio.
No kids to worry about schools.
How is the quality of life? Traffic, crime, services? Is the homeless population really as bad as I read about online?
TIA

It’s like living in Baton Rouge or NOLA tbh. Reminds me a lot of those 2 places. Industrial city.

The South side is really nice and booming. The downtown area is pretty quiet during the day. Lived there for three years. Wasn’t bad at all tbh. I like riding down shoreline from downtown to the university. Pretty nice views and homes.

I haven’t been in 20 years either. Loved port A. Fun times in my younger years. Lived out the song “corpus Christi bay”.

It’s not the nicest part of Texas but it’s 100000% better than living in either one of those cesspools.

I spent this past Christmas in Corpus with my in-laws. Definitely enjoyed my time there, and a Christmas Eve visit to buy seafood in Port Aransas for a gumbo was a great time. My only previous visit to CC was 20 years ago and I stopped to drink a beer on the bay per Robert Earl’s instructions.

It's hot as frick and humid AS frick.
I like it there, but man you just walk outside and it feels wet all the time.

I had a project there 2 years ago that required me to be there during the week. I basically lived down there for a a year. Personally, I loved it. My apartment was on enis Joslin by the aTm CC and the project was on the other side of the big bridge, so I would take Ocean drive to and from each day. Def not bad.

They have a lot of Mexican food, but good luck finding amazing Mexican food.
Local buzz over the opening of a new restaurant is usually limited to the name beginning with Taqueria Jalisco #x, where X represents a new number. Other new restaurants still feature some variation of the words Taqueria and Jalisco, often without a number.
I have friends that live there, but all of them apply to jobs outside of CC in an effort to get out.
What I like about it is access to fresh seafood (though it is the only place in my life to have served me bad oysters), and a nice environment to enjoy Astros minor league baseball.

Your upside is the Navy base, and huge hares to hunt. The downside is that Corpus is the kind of place where they would do drive bys on bicycles, and stab the greyhounds that were abandoned from the track to death in the streets. That was a while back, but I doubt that place has improved.

Grandma lives there so we venture that way once or twice a year.
Kiki’s on Everhart is fantastic.
Find a good pan dulce bakery. The piggies and empanadas beat any donut place in Louisiana
They have a nice aquarium and the USS Lexington is a must visit.
It stays hot and humid over there and the lows never get as low as here. On the other hand, the highs very rarely get in the upper 90s and 100s like we’ve experienced as norms the past couple of summers.
Summer droughts are brutal
Fishing around the area is good especially with that Gulf of America breeze.
The soil there is bad if you’re into gardening.

As big as Corpus is, it’s boggling that they only have a southland conference college there and community college

In addition to what has already been posted…
Corpus Christi Bay is fantastic for watersports.
They get a nice breeze. Have the Astros AA affiliate and a nice stadium. Great fishing. Nearby Rockport is known as vacation home area for sport fisherman. Nearby Port Aransas has beach.
However, I have been for work in the last year, and it’s probably overall more run down than it was 20 years ago.

Uh, that is not good. I haven't been back since the 90s, and if it's gotten even worse...

Great place if you want to catch a huge speckled trout...Baffin Bay has monsters. Only other thing I remember is they had Whataburgers on every corner. Lots of Mexicans...and this was 20+ years ago so I am sure it's much more now.

Corpus COULD be a great city as it has all the makings of fun gulfside geography. However the culture is built on industrial refineries, shipyards and agriculture, so you don’t see much new residential development across all the areas.
There are many high dollar homes on the islands that have water access. And I’m impressed with the amazing amount of money from Dallas, Austin and Houston trying to make Port A a beach resort (Cinnamon Shores, etc).
BUT with the rivers dumping silt in the Gulf of America there, the beach will always be very brown (sand and water). Sure there may be days where the water clears up, but in general it’s much the same as Galveston and Biloxi. (Biloxi is nicer)
