Washed out by the NFL playoffs and inauguration
If the game wasn't two giant brands it would have been a blood bath.

Well, let’s see, there was a presidential inauguration that day. Very bad decision to schedule the game on that day.

People that obsess/brag about silly things like viewership & stadium noise are a strange bunch.

You’re telling me people weren’t interested in seeing the #7 team play the #8 team to determine who’s the best team in the country? I’m shocked.

I didn't watch because idgaf about either team. The winner made no difference to me and I had better things to do that night.

Well, those teams did beat the #1,#2,#3,#4,#5,#6 Ranked Teams
Funny how you ignore that part.
Also the rankings were nonsense because Boise State, Arizona State got byes and were thus "top 4" ranked teams in name only.

It was beyond stupid to play the game on the same day as the inauguration. They should have either played the game last Friday or on Tuesday.

the game was played way too late, the gap between conference champion games and national championship game was way too long…especially when you have high quality NFL playoffs in between

Needs to moved back at least a week. 8 teams. Finish up the weekend after the new year.

It was stupid, especially since most football fans tend to be conservative men who would be watching Trump.
Also I imagine a lot of people tuned out when Ohio State got up 31-7.
Everyone said "Here we go again, another Ohio State blowout", which it was until ND made their little run at the end.

I mean it was Ohio State and Notre Dame. Regular season tv ratings showed that SEC brings in the big numbers. Go look at the CBS ratings this year with the Big Ten as opposed to the SEC.

Lower than Michigan vs Washington is very telling. There's no reason a Ohio State vs Notre Dame championship game shouldn't put up huge numbers. College football is trending in the wrong direction.
The playoff lasted way too long, burned out interest, ran too deep into NFL playoffs.
The cadence of games was particularly terrible. The playoff would appear and then disappear for 2 weeks before coming back and it did that like three times.

Michigan fans are in full meltdown.
They only had 1/2 a title in the last 70 years until they FINALLY got one.
They thought that they would have bragging rights over Ohio State for a few years, if not a decade.
And then bam, 12 months later Ohio State is National Champs
They are now grasping at viewership ratings to cope.
I almost feel bad for them, almost.

Nobody outside of the Midwest cares about these teams.

They need to hold the title game on a Sat night!
