Bored...so...here goes. IMO, Herb is our most valuable trade asset mainly because...

Posted on 1/19/25 at 10:09 am
---his "worth" is much higher to several other teams that are on the verge of being VERY serious contenders to win it all...than it is to the Pelicans, given their current situation.
---Just a coupla prime suspects are the Mavericks and the Nuggets. A healthy Herb...could make either of these teams into a team I could see in the Finals...and maybe winning it all. (By the way...I think the Mavs were pretty much a fluke last year...when they made the Finals and were NOT a serious threat to win it all.)
---Now...I'll be your huckleberry...how about the Mavs offer Gafford and a first round pick for Herb? Too little?...Too much?
---I'm having trouble coming up with a proposal that makes any sense from the Nuggets for THIS season...but things SHOULD loosen up as teams adapt to the new CBA, hopefully starting next year. Anybody got any ideas for a deal with the Nuggets? I'll hang up and listen.
PS: I'm assuming Herb will have a remarkable recovery and be available for the playoffs...I have NO reason to assume this to be true...other than...I JUST WANT TO DO SO !!...and it makes this conversation a bit more interesting.

Serious question... Are you just a Herb fan or a Pels fan? Because while I agree that Herb has the most value its also because he's one of our best assets to keep.

You just want to escape this hell you stumbled into with Herb making you a Pels fan. Not gonna happen.
To me the player that needs to go that many seem to be holding out hope for is Hawkins. It’s just a fact that if you aren’t All Star or near All Star caliber you get traded before your 2nd contract is up. That’s just how the NBA operates.
A big part of that is the 2nd contract for the just ok players usually isn’t the best value. So the sooner you trade them once you find out they aren’t a long term piece, the better the return.
It doesn’t have to be this season but it does need to be next.

Sounds like we probably have pretty much the same opinion on the "value" or lack thereof...of Hawkins.
On your opening comment...I'm probably "guilty as charged"...but I've done my best to give the Pels the benefit of the doubt...and IF...we can somehow come up with a top 3 pick in the draft (& especially if it's Flagg)...I think there is still hope for the Pelicans...and Herb.

Being honest...I wasn't a Pels fan...until they drafted Herb. IF...they traded Herb, let's say to the Mavs...I'd be a Mavs fan...but I'd still have a soft spot in my heart for the Pels...ESPECIALLY if they got rid of 2 or 3 players that I honestly can NOT stand.

Who are the players? No pressure I genuinely want to know.
On another note you are not going to win any good grace with fans by admitting you secretly hope he's traded to the Mavs/ Nuggets so you don't have to support a poverty franchise.
Its understandable but frowned upon

It would have been easier to trade Herb if we kept DD. But I don’t see the point now. Herb is the type of player you want on your team.

This is such a weird attitude.
I know I’m one to talk …being abroad.
Support the team from where you are born / live.
It then becomes more than a team… it’s about pride of place. It means something.
Otherwise you’re just empty when it comes to support. No values or deep rooted connection. Losses mean nothing, wins mean nothing.
Players come and go… the team is for life.

Our most valuable trade asset in our pick this year. We would get more for that than any player on our roster right now.
I mean he's hurt and out till mid-March at the earliest, right?

Totally agree with that...I was just talking about our current roster.

Please...I've probably already made enough enemies with my original post...BUT...I will say the following.
I'm definitely weird...but I form "first opinions" on players...sometimes the first game I watch them play...and sometimes, it takes maybe a full season. Sounds strange...but that's just the way it is.
So...I'll now say that I formed my "first opinion" on BI on the 5th game I ever watched the Pels play (with Herb of course) back in 2021-22 vs the Hawks. Just a meaningless regular season game...but BI made an absolutely horrible impression on me...and it has stuck with me ever since. From that day on...I have wanted to trade BI, the first chance we got...(he actually had SOME degree of trade value back in those days).
Really no point to my bad-mouthing other players...but BI has always...well...nevermind.

No. Murphy is worth substantially more. We would get multiple firsts for him, possibly unprotected.
Zion's value is up and down, but he should get more from the right team. I think Murray would garner more too.
Jones is a great defender, but that doesn't mean a ton in the NBA. Patrick Beverly and Tony Allen were defensive wizards and didn't have huge value. The league just doesn't value great perimeter defenders that much. Sad but true..

Depends on the team. OKC...maybe the best team in the NBA at the moment...just gave Caruso a 4-yr $81M contract at age 31. Herb is better than Caruso...and 26 years old. Before the Thunder got Caruso from the Bulls...I was actually hoping they would come after Herb and offer a few of those tasty draft picks they have stocked up on while tanking for several years. Would be a "win/win" situation for both teams.
But, that's over & done...and now a few other teams, including the Mavs and the Nuggets find themselves in the position the Thunder WERE in...hunting for that defensive stopper that can put them over the top. If the stars line up just right...maybe it could be a "win/win" for both the Pels and whichever team wants to overpay for Herb...while their "title window" is still open.

Im only offloading Herb if im using him with a CJ or BI contract to get an All-Star back.

Rest assured...even though I'm talking about trading Herb...I would NEVER trade Herb unless I'm getting massively overpaid. My main point in my "Herb discussions"...is to stress the point that he is worth waaaaay more to a team that is on the edge of playing for it all...and thinks Herb would get them over that edge. We all probably luv Herb on the Pels...but at this point...he is not the type player that can make the Pels a serious contender...which he CAN do, with certain other teams.
It's terrible for a true Pels fan to even THINK about...trading Herb. I totally understand...and agree.

I'm only offloading Herb if we are serious about trading Zion or get a serious offer for Zion.
If we really want to be successful it would be smart keeping 1 of BI/ Zion.
The only 3 players remotely available as all star returns would be LaVine, Jarrett Allen, and Garland. (Maybe MPJ). And we don't need to attach Herb to acquire any of them.

We traded our best on ball defender already to Atlanta and you want to get rid of our 2nd best one now too? No. Also, he’s out for the year so…..
Posted on 1/19/25 at 12:34 pm to Dantheman504
I just can't imagine a scenario where our "Zion situation" ends well.
So, I'm just gonna concentrate on the Pels landing Flagg in the upcoming draft...& he turns out to be as great as I think he might be...& he makes all the other players "better"...which is what a truly great Batman is suppose to do.
And the Pels clean house of 2 or 3 players that I can't stand...and Herb stays with the Pels and we become serious contenders within the next 2 years or so.

Is he? I think they are about the same, but I'll go with it..

He's a bench player for them. They traded a declining asset (Giddey), that was facing criminal charges, straight up for him. They didn't give a ton for him. So how does that translate into Jones having a lot of value?
quote:

Neither of those teams have anything we want, that they would give up.
Jones isn't getting moved. The injury is going to play a big factor, where teams aren't gambling on him healing by the playoffs. I don't believe we'd get a ton for him regardless. We would be valuing picks for him. Most of the "good teams" either don't need him or have limited trade assets. Bad teams, with the picks, aren't sending out a haul for him..
