Open the chimney flue and look up the stack with a flashlight to make sure a squirrel or bird has not built a nest in it. Happened to me.

First time? Yes have it inspected and cleaned.
And don’t burn green or soft woods such as pine in it.

He said “chimney sweep”. That means wood. You don’t need one with gas.

Need more context. Is it a brand new fireplace? Or is it the first time lighting it in your newly acquired house? If it’s the latter, I would have it inspected (if you haven’t already) before you use it. You have no idea how the previous owners used it.

If it’s been under 60 this winter, we’ve had a wood fire burning… love the smell and ambiance, very relaxing for some reason.

Make sure the flue is open and clear. You can also light a piece of news paper to make sure you’re getting good airflow and the smoke will go up the chimney, not into the room

ETA: this was our first year in this house, so we did have the chimney cleaned before first use.

Cut up your Christmas tree (take off ornaments first) and stuff all the branches, etc. into the fireplace until you can't put any more branches in it. Then use half of can of charcoal lighter...douse the branches until dripping. Then place a lighted match or lit lighter in the middle of the branches, keeping your face close to the branches as you do so, so you can blow on the flame to help get it started.

Hope you have a barrier cap on top of the flu. If starlings or squirrels have built a nest in there, you're gonna have an extremely smoky mess inside your house.

The fact that OP started a thread asking what to do the first time lighting a fire, asking if it is gas or wood is a legitimate question.

Do you have a screen to keep sparks from landing on rugs, floor and furniture?
Do you have fire place tongs, etc. to move wood around?
Do you have matches?
Do you have a fireproof metal bucket and lid to hold cold ashes tomorrow?

Absolutely. do not use gasoline to start a fire.
Kerosene is OK but gasoline will explode.

Put a large block of wood in first. then put some small wood in front, cedar is excellent. Then lay a couple of small pieces of wood over the top of the cedar/kindling.
Then light some cardboard or Newspaper and push it under the kindling.

A milk carton, after ii is dried works great.
