Re-watched The Martian for the first time.

Never watched this one when it came out in theaters. Watched it once at home maybe a year or two once the Blu-ray came out. Watched it again for the first time since during a NASA movie marathon my wife and I are having this week. We went to Space Center Houston last weekend after a wedding so we were on a kick.
Feel like this movie is a solid B for me. CGI felt like it aged a little poorly especially in the beginning scenes on Mars. I don't know what they did practically and what was CGI but even the suits felt like they were added in afterwards.
Anyway, it was pretty enjoyable and I thought the cast was awesome. Loved the chemistry of everyone and love a good Mission Control "we need to get these boys home" plot. Definitely not as good of a space movie as Interstellar and my wife who is a huge NASA nerd described this more as a "cool/bro science" movie rather than a good science movie.

If you get the chance, the book is much better. Adds a lot of tension to parts of the movie that were quickly resolved on screen. I did really like the movie though.
The author also wrote another space story called Project Hail Mary and it is the best audiobook I have ever listened to thanks to the narrator and certain aspects of the book. Go in blind if you can. They are currently adapting it for the big screen with Ryan Gosling playing the lead. It’s in post-production and will release in 2026 I believe.

It's considered one of the more "accurate" movies as far as the science. I was watching Neil DeGrasse Tyson talking about this movie and he spoke with Ridley Scott about a flaw in the science which was due to the atmosphere of Mars, it's not possible to have violent wind storms which is what set up the entire story. RS told him he had to use it to make the movie work. NDT agreed.
I give it a solid A.

That was a great movie to me. Mixed in the humor pretty well.

I'm sure I will get hate on here, but who cares...
The Martian > Interstellar

But he always says how much he enjoys these movies and he gets some extra enjoyment from fact checking these films or doing the math to figure out exactly where things are, how much they weigh, how much energy involved, etc.
He figured out the actual weight of Thor's hammer, but when a fan pointed him to a Marvel character sheet that listed the "real" weight, he happily acquiesced to Marvel's knowledge of their magical character.

The Martian is certainly more entertaining than Interstellar. It is a very enjoyable movie and a really enjoyable book.
Andy Weir also wrote a really enjoyable book called Project Hail Mary, which will be a movie next year I believe.

I've never had a need to rewatch Interstellar. In my den, the Martian is the Sci-Fi variant of Road House or Goodfellas. If it's on, we're watching it.

You saw the same interview I see. How did you like the movie?

Can we get a realistic space movie where absolutely no one comes back alive?

I didn’t watch it in theaters. I watched it once at home. This was my second watch. Thus my first rewatch.
To me interstellar is an elite film and this was basically a pop corn flick more geared towards a mass audience.

There's not a ton of "realistic" movies to get what you're looking for.
I would say 2001 is the closest to what you're looking for. The entire crew of the Discovery either dies or evolved into something else and never came back

Absolutely agree. Interstellar is the most over rated movie of the last decade or so.

I have t seen it but Event Horizon?
Also, regarding Project Hail Mary, Rocky may be my favorite fictional character ever. I really hope the movie is done right.

This was a funny joke in the book and I have to believe it influenced the casting decision because it’s my favorite part of the movie.

You're correct. Interstellar is an elite film. Rewatched it in IMAX recently and it's incredible.
I did enjoy the Martian (especially the book) but they aren't really even close.

Always enjoyed this movie. I usually find myself watching it anytime it's on.
