I will be in the blind with eyes to the sky and fingers crossed. Surely this front will push some ducks our way.

I doubt it. Past 5-10 years or so these late season fronts have done nothing but blow water out the marsh and push the birds that are around south. We’ll see but I’m over the wishful thinking.

It's a shame typically I would be off South pass this weekend shooting canvasbacks and pintails it's just not worth it anymore. I can go to my deer lease in the south delta and kill wood ducks and a handful of mallards and not battle the crowds.

After hunting Venice for over 45 years 30-50 days a year I now go down for the tradition of opening day and to fish ducks are a bonus I never thought I would say that ever.

Hopefully you N. Louisiana guys have some birds we have noticed a big increase in numbers near Vicksburg the last 10 days. Hoping this freeze pushes more mallards to us.

They are on their way south. Yesterday afternoon I noticed a large influx of birds from the north. Lots of spoons, gw teal and pintails. Not sure where all the mallards went, but I only saw a handful. Usually that’s pretty much all I see. Spoons were absolutely beautiful in their full plume.

Are you talking Texas or Louisiana? Texas is a different flyway

What has happened to the LA flyway? Where are all the birds? Did they shift west or are they staying up north?

I wouldn’t expect much. It will still bring some birds down, but once the winter solstice comes and goes, the birds know it’s time to start heading back to the breeding grounds

Even the Arkansas guys are starting to complain.

I've seen recent videos of flooded corn fields frozen over with thousands of birds standing on the ice eating corn they couldn't reach until it froze over.

What general area? Not getting my hopes up for this weekend, especially after last couple hunts, but I'll be out there regardless.

I’m in TX panhandle and I realize a different flyway, just reporting on the birds headed South. Also got report of new birds in Texarkana area about 2 hours ago. I’m headed that way tomorrow, not in mood to saw cut ice all weekend.

Farm is doing it wrong if that’s the case.

Flooded corn should never freeze over, (assuming it’s being used for hunting) it should be aerated to remain open and with said aerators, they should be controlling the water by raising it as the corn below gets eaten, that way the ducks have plenty of food always and you’re never locked up. I’ve managed a few clubs that have hunted flooded corn over the years there’s definitely a science to it.

How do you aerate a pond enough to keep it from freezing?

If you have access to a different water source pump water into it

Keep the water moving. It costs a fortune to pump water essentially 24/7 for several weeks, hell even months sometimes, but people will do it for their ducks.
