Notre dame and Penn state’s defenses are where I hope LSU gets back too next year

Both defenses are nasty, get after the qb, play tight man coverage and tackle will in space. This year we didn’t have the players to execute consistently the way dame and Penn state do defensively. However, next year I think we absolutely have the talent on paper. I trust the defensive coaching staff we have in place to get next year’s unit to its ceiling and that’s without even mentioning the safety additions we will add.

Agree both Defenses look solid. Not many blown coverages guys that can tackle in space. LSU used to be like this.

This year was bearable because at least the defense showed signs of improvement as the season went on. The defense while Jayden was going for the Heisman was absolutely unwatchable.

When was the last time LSU finished in the top 10 in the NCAA in total defense?

Our defense next year will be lucky to have improved to average. A one year jump from the worst defense in college to below average is probably not going to a well coached top 10 defense next year.

I agree but also recognize those QBs were horrible. Tonight is the national championship

Disagree, All you need is Dline, mainly DT players. Lsu had zero this past season. Portal and freshman growth I expect much better D.

Dline makes EVERYONE else better

Easy to play that type of defense when Leonard and Allar are the qbs.

ND avoided competent passing offenses this year which masked a lot of their issues on the back end.

SC threw for 360 yards on them with a backup QB.

LSU does need to raise their physicality level overall. I will give you that.

they had some good players but ND didn't have to defend much against the pass and still let the nittany's run all over them. Penn State couldn't pass protect against a really bad passing attack.

yes, give them props for being tough, but they weren't great. and sure, they were better than us. still, i would hope for more.

I would love to see the day when LSU finally fields a bad arse defense I can be proud of. Just like the defenses of old. LSU just does not look like the same team anymore without a good defense. That used to be our brand.

Good QBs would have picked both of those defenses apart. PSU receivers were open. Their QB was awful. Leonard is a gamer but not a very dynamic passer.

We lost the entire DL? Who is coming in that is guaranteed to save the day let alone be an improvement? Never seen an LSU defense with such poor and weak play in the trenches. Both sides of the line seem to get pushed around which means no pressure on the opposing QB and no running game.

the DB's on both teams looked strong, especially ND's.

Defenses win championships, this years finalists prove that.

None of these programs in the semis have gunslingers.

The defense will be better. I think Dline play will be a huge difference. They will be deep at all positions. The DE transfer from Florida St was icing on the cake. If they can add an experienced safety then it will be set. Question is will they gel together?

There's 0 excuse to not take a similar improvement stride in 2025 on defense, similar to the 2023 to 2024 improvement. Adding 3 des should have similar edge rush pressure, guillory/ texas dt/ 4 fr add to yr 2 mckinley/ breaux / shone, lb have weeks/ perkins/ keys/ weeks and 2 stud fr, db have 3-4 new cbs (va tech 2 yr starter and stud fr), and hopefully nc st safety next to spears or toviano. We should be really fun to watch next year on defense.

We lose penn, sage, burns. Enough said

The hurtful losses are swinson, Alexander, savion at times was a manchild. But we're backfilling in spades at these spots

It will come down to culture

Defense is about attitude and want-to

Ever since Orgeron eroded the culture post-2019, it's never come back

Don't get me wrong, personnel definitely matters. But you can't tell me ND has way better personnel than LSU. They play Ryan Clark's little son for God's sake.

If Baker can get the kids to buy in year 2, they will be fine. Nobody wants to hear it, but there were signs that some just weren't locked in this year for whatever reason...guys like Perk looked lost...can't have that shite
