If you've eaten sushi rolls, you've likely had smelt roe.

Those come from Capelin, a variety of smelt, that get about 8-10 inches.

The delta smelt in question get like 3-5 inches I believe. So they would be somewhat smaller most likely, but definitely not microscopic

No water in fire hydrants, gave all good firetrucks supplies to Ukraine, and firefighter funding cut by the Mayor Karen...

Living only in California, the delta smelt is a tiny, silvery blue fish that has been at the heart of a longtime war over the state's water. Scientists warn that the smelt is nearing extinction after four years of severe drought and decades of water diversions.

Start a hydra farm on 75 acres and sell them like anchovies or bait. And open the water.

Does the Pelosi Vineyards get special water while Cally burns?

Someone should definitely go looking for them to see if they survived the fires in the area.

You can bet money that the tree huggers are 100% okay with this.

Smelt is good when fried. That's the only opportunity I've had to try any.

Smaller fish will surprise you. There's a common bait fish called the Fathead Minnow that I use quite a bit for crappie bait and I've actually bred and raised them before in a big stock tank to supply my own bait. Pretty easy because they basically spawn year round as long as the water is around 65° or warmer, and that's definitely most of the year here in OK. They primarily feed on algae so as long as the stock tank gets a bit of sunlight, there's always food. The algae helps with oxygen levels as well.

I was pretty surprised by the size of their eggs. About half the size of a .177 caliber BB and the fish themselves (especially the females) rarely exceed two inches in length. It's around the same size eggs that you see popping out when you catch a female crappie or LMB off of her nest.

The larger egg size certainly cuts down on the amount of roe a female can drop in one spawn, but it gives the fry a larger size and a better chance of survival upon hatch. Also, as soon as that female drops those eggs, she's feeding and building more eggs to spawn again in just a couple weeks.

Off topic, sorry. Just felt like I could contribute a tertiary anecdote. I'm a living plethora of useless information.

i work in fire service and this is all demonstrably false fear mongering for idiots
1 - what do you think happens to water pressure when the fire service opens a couple hundred hydrants along with every resident with a garden hose all at the same time?
2- could you link me to all the "good" - whatever that means, firetrucks being sent to ukraine?
3- budgets get cut. are you under the impression that year after year municipal budgets miraculously receive more money? 20 million, while not nothing, is a tiny fraction of lafd's budget and had zero effect on this fire response. why don't you link me to all your suggestions the past year or so where lafd could have spent that money to prevent this fire. i'll wait
