I typically go in my pool 5-6 days a week and subject to whatever temperature the weather decides. Right now is some prime time to be plunging given my pool temps are sitting exactly in the 50-60 degree range. But I've got to wear this dang monitor for a week and can't submerge in water.

Can I submerge half my body or is it bad or negligible to do so? Is it worth it to do it just above my waist?

Any cold exposure, even to isolated areas, will have a beneficial effect. Your body will still have a physiological response and release norepinephrine.

To that end, I’ll take a quick cold shower post workout if I can’t plunge. My body certainly isn’t enveloped in cold, but I feel it, it works for me, and my Whoop measures a pretty significant impact.

I had to wear a heart monitor for a week or so and I submerged as much as I could to keep the habit going.

Thanks guys! I did see where beginners can do partial submersions and then ease into the whole body so I can still do just the bottom half with no negative repercussions!

Look into it but I think you shouldn’t do immediately after workout.

If you're sitting in the water waist-deep, make sure to get your hands underwater and keep them moving around. Your hands and feet transfer a ridiculous amount of temperature into and out of your body.

To me, hands and feet are the only really difficult parts of cold plunges. I seem to be able to take it on my trunk, but extremities HURT!

Well my whole lower body was hurting this morning! Every nerve felt like it was on fire. Water was 48-50 degrees. I don't see how people do 32 degrees with ice floating. I can take the cold (being cold, feeling cold), it's the pain when it's that cold that is almost intolerable.

I hit the same thing around 40 I think. Especially in the legs.

My gym has been about 58 degrees and it’s never easy but not miserable either. I go up to neck but mostly keep fingers out as they’ve gone numb in past for hours after.

They are installing an upgrade that is supposed to get it to mid 40s (opens back up soon). I’m a little scared of that.

this is all fine, you are just trying to get the mental effects

there are positive effects on recovery or muscle building or fat burning, quite the opposite

so try it...if it is making you feel better and more alert awesome and keep doing it.

but ftr sauna and heat is actually good for you unlike cold

Sub 40 is bru-tal. Double so if the water is moving even a little.

I just go in up to my lower back where I had surgery. I am too much of a wuss to go further. However, I can hang out like that for 20 min easy. We keep the plunge at 45

Doing them outside in the pool is a nice experience compared to sitting in a tub.

Went the other day when it was in the 20s outside and it was awesome.

Yea, I think my limit is the 40's. I've only been doing 2 minutes cause I have raynauds. If it's above 50 then I can do 5 minutes.

My sauna is on order...can't wait!!!

But I love the cold. I actually do feel invigorated. But I've also noticed that my belly fat goes down when I get in the cold and I feel "puffy" when I don't get to do it as much (like in the summer). I have a chiller on my pool so I can still cold plunge in the summer by isolating my spa but I just "go with the flow" of the season.

Also, I'm female, so I love plunging just after exercise b/c I'm not trying to build muscle. I just want to be healthy.

most people feel really invigorated after cold plunge, that is its main benefit. You will see some inflammation go down but the info is mixed on that...as far as true health benefits, sauna is way better so you should enjoy that
