How did you handle paternity leave?

First child, a son, enters the world this Thursday.
Nervous but excited. I work for myself along with a business partner so no official paternity leave, just going to play this thing out and see how it unravels. What was this experience like work wise? Is my wife going to kick me out after a few days?

Back when my first was born, my work was nice enough to let me "work from home" for almost 3 months (mid Oct through the holidays). My work requires field visits and things like that, so I still went in as needed a good bit. I also took the first 2 weeks off entirely. It was awesome being able to be there for so much of my daughter's first few months. Highly recommend if you can

This didn't exist when my kids were born in 2008 & 2012.
I took 2 days off for each birth while we were staying in the hospital.

My work gave me two months for both my kids. I took a month off once my wife went back to work and actually never got back around to using the other month for each.

Didnt have it. I was back to work in a day, wife was home for a couple of weeks without pay.

Had a young associate take the full three months off for family bonding, like his work didn't exist or something (which I had to reassign). I always thought less of him because he put his shite off on us, I mean, he didn't have a baby, his wife did.
So, as a manager, my rec would be to discreetly come and go as you need, but generally work needs to come first and you need to handle your entire workload.

Took a few days off but once wife and baby were settled in at home I was back to work. This is before paternity leave was a thing.

I got two days off for each of my kids. That was a long time ago.
Company I work for now gives dads 8 weeks off and moms 16 weeks.

So you as a manager knowingly approved 3 months of leave for a worker with no plan on how to deal with it (don't tell me you didn't have warning, the baby didn't just appear), and you think he's the problem?

Yep, many careers where taking three months off is not an option. Since you used the term associate, I assume it’s law. If you’re a lawyer and can disappear for three months with no issue, then you aren’t needed.

Only time I took off was while my wife was in the hospital. Our first was born in 2001, our second in 2008. Back then fathers taking maternity leave really wasn’t a thing yet.

So the company policy is to give 3 months, yet employees are looked down on if they actually use it?
