I may be remembering this wrong, but I thought a kid in Baldwin County, Alabama caught one recently.

Many years ago somewhere around late 90's-early 2000, my dad caught one off the coast of MS. We had no clue what it was at the time. Was watching one of those fishing shows later and the guy caught a snook in FL.

Did some digging and it turns out that they used to be quite common along the N gulf coast. I guess all of the net fishing either wiped them out or drove them south.

I was surprised to learn that people fish for tarpon in Lake Pontchartrain.

I don’t think it was the nets and I don’t think they were ever that common on N gulf coast

You ever tasted one? Eat one and then you’ll know why they disappeared.

That’s because there are no croaker excluder devices on shrimp boats.

there are a ton of snook in Alabama. You can go out and successfully target them.

I’m not sure if serious. They are extremely rare in the Florida panhandle, I’m fairly certain the cold kills them off and they don’t really migrate like tarpon as far as I know.

As far as Florida goes, snook aren’t really found very far north of Tampa.

Yeah anytime central to southern Florida has a bad cold snap they have fish kills. Snook can’t take very cold water temps. So much fun to catch though. Did a night time charter out of Venice FL using live shrimp and caught a bunch of small ones.

Not arguing with you, but this doesn’t seem right.

they’re all in the river systems east of the bay. My brother lives there and he and the local guides fish for them all the time

They’re purposely not putting everything on social media, but have been doing a lot of work with the state marine resources

This has not always been the case and they have just recently (last two years) seen an increase in catches.

Interesting. A friend of mine just caught a bone fish off the beach this fall outside of Destin, a very rare catch.

I've only heard of 2-3 snook caught in the florida panhandle. Most of our Creeks and rivers are spring fed, so fairly constant temp year round.
