Which is already dangerous and unethical enough. There is no reason for the OP to make it sound like the study leads were spreading malaria through mosquito bites

It's kinda both. They're trying to spread an attenuated virus that shuts off at a specific time to inoculate the host. As you say, it's dangerous and unethical. They could get the dosage or timing wrong, or the damn thing could "escape" like covid.
I'm trying to figure out if they just don't learn from their mistakes, or that they are learning from their mistakes.

If they have developed a vaccine treatment for malaria through genetic engineering, why not just administer it directly? Why turn something like that loose in an uncontrolled population of mosquitoes? What could go wrong?
