In my saddle on the edge of a slough. I haven’t been in here since October so kind of blind this morning, but I’ve been hunting this area for a few years. This slough isn’t far off the 4 wheeler trail and everybody crosses it and goes deeper in the woods. I do the same thing during bow season too, but on most of my walks back to the bike, I’ll find fresh tracks right on the edge of the slough. Deer aren’t dumb, they know where the pressure is.
Good luck! Looking for the swamp donkey to put my last tag on.

You should see some rut action in the next week or two.
I haven't been to Red River yet this year, and may not make it, but it's great hunting when the water is up.

My group has been learning Buckhorn and may be on to something. It's some new terrain, with way less pressure, but way harder to hunt.

52 degrees. .270 A Bolt.
Stand I picked was a former buzzard roost. Smells awful. Gotta be big enough to go on the wall to shoot.

I’ve seen chasing here as early as Christmas, but this hot arse winter might push it back. I plan to do some serious scouting today and tomorrow.

I’d probably delete that unless you want the pressure to pick up

Just saw a 10” basket rack buck bedded at the wood’s edge while driving around the worksite. Hoping they get on their feet for y’all out in the woods this morning.

You’re gonna be the reason I buy another 257 wby
I had one when I was younger and broke, and ended up selling it. Loved that gun and everyday you remind me of it lol
Currently looking at the Mark V backcountry Ti left handed. Just need an extra $6k for it lol

My 257 is in a left handed Mark V Ultralight. It’s my favorite rifle, by far.
Son shoots a 257 in Vanguard. Very accurate rifle.
Ultra flat without the brutal recoil of the larger magnums, lots of bang, flops and tremendous blood trails.

What do you think of the Fierce rifle? I know the Epic Outdoors crew from Utah really pushes them.

Not trying to talk you out of a Mark V. But I can’t say enough good things about the Vanguards. Made by Howa in Japan. Howa 1500s and Weatherby Vanguards are built on the same action, a Remington 700 clone, and are probably the best value in bolt action hunting rifles out there. I carried a Sako to hunt this morning because I am in the woods and it one of the lighter and more compact rifles I have. But it isn’t as accurate as either of the Weatherby Vanguards I own. The gun I tote when hunting larger fields, clearcuts or the transmission line we have is a Vanguard in 6.5-300, and prior to getting that gun It was a Vanguard in .257 roy.

I too am in Yancey. Hunting next few days.

Foggy is an understatement.

Heard some splashing right at daylight and got excited, was a group of hogs.
