I was thinking how we could truly attract the best. Surely the best are worth a lot on the open market.

Here is my proposal.

$100k min salary starting at age 20.

Needs to increase by $10k minimum until 35. So at 35 if you’re not making $250k you got to go back.

This allows truly exceptional people to come in and prevents abuse of low cost wages to suppress American workers.

Also - once in an h1b visa you can switch companies easily as long as new company hits wage requirement.

I like this idea.

This is why I say cut them in half.

They have their purpose.

But most of them are terrible and you can't depend on them for anything except to collect a paycheck.

Keep the very best. See which ones want to become red-blooded Americans.

Most of them lead towards socialism anyways. Send that half packing.

Good plan and if they really wanted to attract the best and brightest they would be doing it. That’s not want they want it for. They want to replace US workers for foreign workers at a cheaper price. Cheap labor so they can have more money in their pockets.

Just force companies to pay equal to + a 5-10% premium for their services when compared to American citizens. That would highlight whether they're truly needed or not.

ETA - The 5-10% premium could be handled as a tax or fee, not necessarily paid to the workers. I think additional payroll tax would be a good start.

You have insular hiring networks now, so this is a terrible idea.

Because then no company would use it. Literally the entire point of H1B is to get help you can overwork and get away with paying less. Also helps satisfy racist DEI requirements.

Has nothing to do with attracting talent.

Those that are truly the best are not signing up for $76K anyway, so your plan doesn't help anything.

Put an employment tax on any foreign workers, say around 40-50% based on the median pay for that job/location.

You'll see how badly they really need the help.

Still low for Cali or any tech belt.

I like the idea of pay them whatever but the tax costs 30% of the mean wage in that area.

Hire for 100k for a 130k mean job?

Pay 39k in taxes for that visa making it a 139k role.

Edit: bucky beat me to it.

This nonsense continues to be debated??? The whole "illegal alien" debate was a big sham from the beginning, and was created to keep things like they currently are. They are exempt from paying income taxes. I say we triple tax them, and they won't to come here to begin with. Or, pay their wages in their own currency which is probably highly inflated and worthless, and let the IRS keep the remaining balance.

Making imported workers paid more than domestic workers isn’t a solution either.

How about pay domestic and imported workers the same salary for the same job.

I say make the employer eat the burden of the tax, not the employee

Just end the program, the downsides are too severe.

We can revisit the issue in twenty or thirty years.

This is why people in India will beg, borrow, steal, lie, and take interview courses to lie better, just to get a H1B.

They shack up over here and drop an anchor baby.

Not that I blame them, but thats why they are willing to take jobs at crap pay.

Instant chain immigration...

Our system allows it and they sacrifice everything to make it happen.

Again if they are a significant talent they should make lots of US babies.

This is absolutely stupid.

Especially coming off the worst inflationary cycle in a while/ever.

Literally the dumbest thing I’ve read in a long time.

This is the real solution. Make it the burden of the employer. And put the funds into social security. To which they are not eligible.

If companies need the workers, they’ll pay. Otherwise they’ll source locally.

Someone else already said this, but it’s essentially a tariff on labor.

And anchor babying needs to be stopped.
