Imho, picking Dances With Wolves over Goodfellas was pretty egregious.

In recent years, Spotlight was pretty bad.

Shakespeare in Love (1998)

This BS winning over Saving Private Ryan was the biggest frick up ever for the Oscars. That’s when a lot of people realized that the Oscars are more about politics than quality.

You might be the first person in the past 20 years to put those two things together in the same sentence.

I've watched every Best Picture winner. "All About Eve" belongs on the worst list...not best.

Films on the worst list are all fine movies. Just likely not the best movie that year.

"Shakespeare in Love" is a fine movie...but not better than "Saving Private Ryan"

The King’s Speech over The Social Network was bizarre at the time, and looks worse in retrospect.

Could not agree more. The Academy wanted to honor a “black” film. It’s wholly unoriginal; nothing more than Schindler’s List on a plantation. Gravity was the much better, more innovative film that year. Even the Academy thought so. It won 7 trophies to 12YAS’s 3.

I don’t get the hate for Crash. I find it to be more in tune with the type of narrative that was becoming en vogue for screenwriting at the time. Is it heavy-handed? Yes. Is it terrible? No. In fact, I like it better than Brokeback which is slow, sad, and doesn’t really paint gay love in the best light since it delves into cowboy fantasy melodrama, a staple of gay porn role play. That shouldn’t be surprising since the source material was written by a straight, white woman. It’s not even close to Ang Lee’s best work.

Argo should be in the top 10 worst, too. It’s a good film. For Netflix.

List is from The Awards Contender on YT. I thought his top 10 list was pretty safe. I just don’t get the love for The Godfather; mob films aren’t my thing. But kudos to him telling the woke crowd, in a very nice way, to F off about GWTW.

Inception should’ve won that year. It became the most influential film of those three by far. TSN doesn’t play well on subsequent viewings; there’s not much else to pick up on. It also feels quite dated to me. TKS has great performances, but it’s a safe choice by the Academy.

I threw up in my mouth over Shakespeare in Love as it is not even close to Saving Private Ryan.

I officially stopped watching and caring about the Oscars when Meryl Streep won for The Iron Lady over Rooney Mara for Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Have not watched the full O show since...

Disagree entirely. TSN holds up great from Fincher's directing to Reznor and Ross' soundtrack. Sorkin's writing is top-notch and Eisenberg plays such a douche perfectly. Garfield is great too. It's a look at the beginning stages of something that has become an unavoidable part of our society now. TKS is totally forgettable. I don't know anyone who's ever rewatched that. It's a Sunday afternoon movie on your recliner.
