I’ve never seen a college football season when I thought the #9 team had a shot to win the NC. The only #7 team I can think of was when chaos erupted in 2007 and LSU went from #7 to #2 and then won it all. But, that was a really good team that lost 2 games in OT.

6 would’ve been fine, 5 conf champs and an at large bid. What’s worse is they’re going to keep adding teams

Money. It’s also why they are about to expand to 14 teams.

These games have been terrible so far. Meddling dilettantes have desecrated and decimated the greatest sport in America with the unchecked portal transfers, pay for play in the guise of NIL, and an expanded, diluted playoff field.

I’ll be the first to admit I have never taken the time to understand rpi but it seems to work for College Baseball and Basketball…why can’t it work for college football?

All I can think about is how bad it’s going to be when we go to 14 and 16

We will have 8-4 teams bitching about not getting in

there aren’t 5 conferences deserving of an automatic spot or even a favored spot.

The P5 is dead.

Pac 12 and Big 12 got gutted and the ACC is weak as ever.

There are 2 good conferences.

“Deserve” is your subjective opinion

Sure but unless everyone plays eachother everything is subjective.

Which 5 conference champs? the “best” 5?

That’s sounds pretty subjective too.

It’s impossible for everyone to play each other

Greed. I mean how much money is enough money. The answer is it’ll never be enough and they will ruin the sport.

Personally I think it’s 2 things:

1) Physicality - it’s much harder for a a team that is physically inferior to win a football game compared to other sports.

2) It’s the ultimate team sport - in basketball and baseball, coaching doesn’t matter as much and it’s easier to have an individual performance carry an entire team. It’s much harder to do that in football.

Just eliminate the conference championship games and go to a 16-team playoff. Include the 16 top ranked teams based on a pre-determined poll/computer formula and do away with the committee. 8 teams would get to host a first-round home playoff game, this would just add to the excitement. And the 17th ranked team would really not have much of a national championship argument. But, of course, they will argue.

You still can’t all play each other. 32 NFL teams, they don’t all play each other. What is your aim exactly because you can’t eliminate subjectivity on a broad scale. Are you looking to create a more pro, exclusive model or do you want the classic, regional representation of college sports?

Too much variance from year to year to do this imo.

This year that would have been Georgia, Oregon, Arizona State, Clemson, and Boise State, then Texas if you go CFP Rankings, Notre Dame if you use the BCS numbers. With crying from whichever of those two don't make it plus Ohio State, Penn State, Tennessee, and, somehow, even Alabama and Ole Miss.
