A scholar working the drive thru at McD's

A few times a month I like to get the McDonald's double cheeseburger, small fries special. It's $4.03,including tax.
So went through the drive thru, got to pay window and gave the scholar working the window a twenty dollar bill and three pennies. When I handed it her, she seemed to have a confused look on her face.
She did her thing at the cash register and handed me back $15 in bills and tried to hand me a bunch of coins. I asked her why she was giving me a dollar in coins. She said it's not a dollar, it's 97 cents. I asked her about the three pennies i gave her and she said she forgot those and reached back to the counter by the cash register and picked up the three pennies and handed them to me.
I told her I gave her 20.03 to pay for a 4.03 order because I wanted $16 in bills back, no coins. Ans she said, yeah, I guess that's another way you could do it.

I already knew McDonald's cashiers weren't math majors, so all I learned from your post is that you're fat.

Eh, it could be a brain fart. That happens. Try it it again later and see if it plays out the same.

why are you still paying cash at a drive thru?

In her defense, and I'm sure she's a moron, this isn't a problem that his arisen just recently. When I was a kid in the 80s and 90s I remember the same kind of morons working the drive thru when my mom would bring us there after school or whatever. These problems were supposed to have been fixed by ubiquitous computers doing all the thinking for them. I'm pretty sure if she had typed in $20.03 into the cash register it would have told her to give you $16 change. I guess this means we're on a whole new level of stupidity: when the morons at the window are too stupid to even use the shortcuts they're given that were designed by engineers to be as user friendly as possible.

To be fair, a lot of people don’t experience dealing with this kind of money exchange until working a register at some establishment. I do it all the time now as a customer, but there was a time as a teenage retail cashier that I never considered someone doing it.

It’s not just Mickey D’s scholars
The last time I went to service Chevrolet to have the oil changed, it cost $65, so I handed the woman $100 bill .
Even though she had an adding machine right there. She called a manager to make sure she gave me the correct change.

Making fun of people working at McD’s is pretty low.

At least you didn't drop the coins on the windowsill and insult her.

I do not use debit or credit cards at any type of restaurant or bar. Unless I’m the one holding the card in my hand to make the transaction, I’m paying in cash.

You're asking why someone would prefer not handing their credit card to a stranger who works at mcdonalds?
