Trying to remember the last time I used a pay phone.

Still don't know. I remember being repulsed but that is all. What year was that, I have no idea. Watching Logan Lucky, which was released in 2017, and they are using pay phones. I would have thought pay phones were obsolete long before that.
Anyone remember the actual year of the death knell of the pay phone?

It’s actually “Death Nell”
The term originated from the 1994 movie starring Jodie Foster

Not sure of the year but the phone company got smart towards the end because they stopped putting the number of the pay phone on the phone so people couldn't call back, you could only call out. They didn't make any money when people called in.

2015 was when they started being pulled, en masse.
2022 was the year the last one was pulled in NYC. I happened to be visiting there at the time. It was a big deal. Superman in Gotham City no longer had a place to change.
There are still a few in Casinos in Vegas ... four, I think I last counted, on Freemont Street.

In 1996 I was still in college and running late for a meeting that was an hour away. I remember doing that math on whether I should waste time pulling over to call them.
Was checking every gas station hoping to find a phone I could drive up to. Saw many pay phones that day.
The next year I had a cell and never thought about pay phones again.

Always thought it was death nail as a kid growing up. Like the last one they pound into your coffin.

I’m pretty sure it’s because of that Jodie foster movie.

Last time I witnessed one being used was about 1992. A group of us were going to a tough man competition, the predecessor to MMA, and we needed to call a guy and tell him we were on the way. Pulled in a gas station and called on a pay phone that looked like it would give you AIDS.

I used pay phones a lot in the mid nineties to late nineties... Had a job that I was on the street and had to communicate with the office.. Cell phones were still expensive with per minute charge after using up what minutes that included in plan.. I think I had a plan that was $30 with 20 minutes of talk no data.. no smart phone...

Probably to try and buy some Mexican brick weed in the late 90s.

Sometime around 1995 but can’t remember specifics
Everyone had stopped using coins and we all had calling cards, you’d go to the pay phone and enter your calling card number then make your call.

Used to use one almost daily at my high school reminding my space cadet dad to come pick us up after school.
We'd call collect and instead of stating our name we'd repeat "pick us up, pick us up" in the recording.
