Anyone own(ed) a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel?

We had one. He turned into an outside dog, which is not what you'd think for a Cavalier, because he wanted to be with his black lab best friend, so he was an awesome little dude. Chased birds and squirrels all day. Heart problems can cause shorter lifespans.

I worked with several when I did pet therapy at OLOL. Great dogs. Very chill and relaxed around sick kids.

Typically very good with kids and people in general.

Often live life as a couch potato. Are predisposed to several medical problems. Wonderful family pets in most cases

Got 2 and have numerous friends who have them. Awesome lap dogs. Very laid back and chill. Although one of mine could maybe use a dose of THC - he has crazy anxiety. I've thought about trying to train him to track deer. They sleep on the couch, the bed and where ever else they so choose. They were kennel trained but we did away with those some time ago.

They do have heart murmurs from time to time. Maybe a few other things.

We also introduced a kitten when they were 3 and 4 years old. They basically think the cat is one of them and vice versi. They sleep huddled up on top of each other most nights and play together when they are active.

Did not own one but practically lived with one for a year (ex GF's dog).

Great dog/companion.

I'll share the negatives: sheds a LOT. Had to vacuum twice a day sometimes. Snores like a 90 yo mad that needs a Cpap. Can keep you up until you get used to it. Constant ear issues with the poor guy along with other genetic things that just don't keep them consistently healthy.

That's all I got. I would still get one though if it came down to it.

They won't eat or maul your children

I have one and I’ve never been a dog person. She is my absolute favorite thing in the whole world. My kids say I love her more than them. While they love everyone, they will pick one person who is their favorite person. She’s like my shadow. Perfect lap dog. A little stubborn as a puppy, but overall amazing.

At this time, wife has 10 cavaliers from 14 y/o to 2. This is a truthful statement no matter what anybody thinks. Everyone of them, and those that have passed on, are my favorite dogs of all time. They are the small enough to be great lap dogs yet large enough to be playful and entertaining as well. Their demeanor and mannerisms provide me with great joy and lasting memories practically every day. Never would I consider ever giving one away as they have become more family than pets.

Even though I highly recommend Cavaliers, there are some drawbacks to consider. They are genetically pre-disposed to having heart and eye issues than can get costly. Quality breeding seems to minimize to reduce these so I recommend you research any potential seller well and be willing to pay up for better bloodlines. It does seem to payoff in the long run.

Have a Cavapoo, which is mixed with a miniature poodle. Fantastic family dog with all ages of children, loyal, fairly smart, and loves to chill.
