GOP Drama: Cotton Blocks Cornyn for Senate Intelligence Chair

Senate Republicans have discussed elevating Sen. John Cornyn to chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, according to party officials, a move that would hand Cornyn a prized gavel as consolation for losing his GOP leader bid and could help induce him to run for reelection in two years.
The complication, and almost certain deal-breaker: Cornyn would have to leapfrog the Republican next in line to chair the Intelligence Committee, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), and Cotton has privately made clear to Cornyn he would claim the position.
Likely ensuring Cotton’s ascension to the chair is the raw politics of last month’s Senate Republican leadership race between Cornyn and Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.). A select rather than standing committee, the intelligence panel’s chair is chosen by the majority leader. And Cotton supported Thune on the private ballot, according to a third Senate Republican, and now Thune is poised to reward him rather than the man he defeated.
A spokesperson for Thune declined to comment.

Cotton has a better chance to come back to MAGA than Cornyn. So, this seems a net positive.

Something no Texan is actually asking for. We're all waiting to primary him.
It's comical that they are painting this as somehow trying to "entice" Cornyn to run for reelection. He's been in that Senate seat for more than two decades and showing no indications he's ready to let go of the power.

Both of them suck.
Cotton isn’t as bad as he’s made out to be. He should be the chair as he was minority member in that committee.

Who is most likely to challenge him?

Paxton has hinted at it several times.

I know Texas is MAGA but Cornyn has a better chance of hiding in the RINO swamp because Texas is much bigger than Arkansas. Arkansas is more MAGA than Texas and Cotton has a lot less room to hide in Arkansas than Cornyn in Texas. With that said Arkansas baws need to stay active and hold Cotton accountable. It not only helps Cotton and Arkansas it helps America.

I think you are wrong. Everybody in Texas knows who he truly is and we know he is a RINO!
We don’t forget in Texas, he is going down!

Yep. And I suspect Thune knows this and so that also may have carried some weight in his decision.

You've got to appreciate the ruthlessness of that move. Also, frick Cornyn.

Tom Cotton is the Arkansas Garrett Graves.

Cornyn is a RINO. And he deserves a cell a lot more than a promotion.

Keeping John Wayne McCornyn off of committees is a great move. It will take away “but we have to reflect him, he controls so much in the Senate” whining.

Ken Paxton, according to two close friends of Paxton.
