I'm guessing the team hit a total salary number that if they go past makes it a lot harder to get under the tax.

All about the tax. Same reason they cut Ryan early in the season. He was playing decently well backup point minutes even after his monster assist game but at this point season is gone so who cares. Even though I would have liked to keep him.
