I’m on a week long hunting/camping trip and it’s been one hell of a time. I’ve posted some of the things in the IST’s but I figured I’d make a thread about it all since I’m bored. I got back from my Missouri trip a week before leaving for this trip. While in Missouri, I brought my camper(enclosed trailer conversion) to a guy to do the plumbing for me so it would be ready when I got back. A couple days before leaving for this trip I wanted to test it out. Turned on the shower, pump started pumping, but I wasn’t getting water. Found the water pouring out the bottom of the trailer. All my piping is inside and exposed except for about 4” where it runs from the kitchen to bathroom. A damn rat chewed a hole in the pex in that tiny section.
Got that fixed and was good to go. Then I hooked up the propane to the hot water heater. It wasn’t working. Said screw it, I’m leaving tomorrow, I’ll just take quick, cold showers. Then Saturday morning when it was 29°, while wading through a swamp on the way in to my spot, I fell in 2 holes and got soaking wet. Another low point.
Saturday night, I go to fire up the generator and the motor is locked up. So I bundled up good and managed to stay warm but I was feeling like things couldn’t get much worse. Yesterday I went to harbor freight to get a new generator. Found the one I wanted online on sale for $800. Got there and it ended up being another 40% off. Paid $462 for an $1,100 generator. Finally a win! Got to camp last night and the thought of taking a cold shower made me start taking the hot water heater apart. Everything looked good inside, gave the gas valve a few taps with my channel locks and it fired up. Got to take a hot shower. Another win for the home team! Things are looking up. After hunting this morning, I was headed back to camp down a real bumpy road. The strap on my 4 wheeler loosened up, I hit a pretty good pot hole and my 4 wheeler bumper hit the back windshield, shattering it.
I’ve never had so many up’s and down’s on a trip as I have on this one. Maybe this mornings events will be topped off with me shooting a big buck with my bow. Staying positive.

I’d love to read anyone else’s similar stories while I sit by a fire this evening at the campground, so please feel free to share.

That's a hell of a run! I hope you do get a good one.

I don't have much other than a deer hitting me on the way to hunt a few weeks ago. I was able to drive off and hunt, just annoying that it's in the shop for a while now.

If I am being perfectly honest, it sounds like you really can't afford hunting as a hobby. Sorry if that stings.

Hey….. All I can say is YOUR MAKING MEMORIES!
My PawPaw would tell you that YOUR BUILDING CHARACTER!
One of my mentors in life asked me one time what the secret to success is……. I said knowledge….. experience? He said it was PERSERVERANCE……. You have to outlast the problem……..

This last week...

I decided I wasn't hunting this year due to a pile.of shite. Won't go into it. Figured we'd get lined up next year.

Then came the invite I couldn't pass up...

I was sick as hell and couldn't move. Said no. Then I decided I need to try for the kids sake as it was a great opportunity for them.

Go fire up the four-wheelers. I had just ran them all a month ago when I worked on the trailer and replaced lights and hubs.

One leaks gas out of the carb, one won't idle anymore and will only run on choke full, the last wouldn't start at all.

Went through them all again. Go the gas to stop leaking and the other two to run...

Day before the trip went to load them up Thanksgiving night.

Trailer lights no longer work, the one leaking gas won't idle and the one not idling is leaking gas at the fuel valve. Kids ATV had a blown fuse I didn't have.

Long story we get out there Friday morning late.

Rifle didn't hold sight in from last year. Had to re sight in and used the few bullets I had stashed from covid. Thankful to have 3 left to use in my bag.

Get to stand and realize the kids took out binoculars out of my bag for the eclipse and didn't put them back...

But..

Had an excellent time with the family and seeing the thrill of my youngest killing and finding his deer and jumping up and down in the woods was something worth all the fricking trouble .

It sounds like you and Mr. Murphy are on a first name basis. Good luck with the rest of your hunting this year

Why? You can buy a junky old camper for almost nothing and it will be ready to go. I see them all over the place.

Deer camp and busted pipes just seem to go together, unfortunately. As said above, it’s all about perseverance.

Took a visiting uncle fishing Friday before the Vandy game. About 1.5 hours from the house.

Get home and ready to disconnect the boat trailer. The locking bolt that holds the tongue into the main part of the trailer is GONE…. It’s one that the first three feet of the trailer frame comes off for storage.

My nerves were shot…. Luckily the safety chains did their job and there was not enough play for the pieces of trailer frame to completely separate.

We saw Coach Kelly in the MS River bridge. Maybe he put a hex on us. lol

In 2024 I’m amazed people still put atv’s in truck beds without a guard dog hitch and when trailers are so cheap.

Hope you kill a good one and nothing else breaks.

I built one 25 years ago that comes up out of the receiver and locks on a ball on the atv. I assume that is what you are taking about. Could be one of the best things I ever built. To be honest, I haven’t used it in many years. Trucks are getting taller and it’s so dangerous just loading and unloading out of the back of a truck, it’s just easier to use a trailer.

To the OP - rats have cost me $3k this year alone. Tractor, boat and atv wiring. All that stuff that went wrong should have been wrung out before leaving on a trip like that.

I drove all the way to Colorado to hike around a bit, almost die, and then spend the rest of the trip laying in a hotel room sucking down oxygen in my drawers.

3rd day I had cabin fever and decided to go walk on this little nature trail thing by the hotel and I got attacked by a dog. Luckily I had enough clothes on to not get fricked up by it.

Almost passed out running away from dog, got sick again, 2 more days and 10 more O2 cans.

I spent a few thousand dollars so i could spend 40 hours driving, zero minutes hunting, and 5 or 6 days laying in a hotel room.

I'm not, it's a legit question. Why would someone go through the trouble of building some half-assed camper when you can buy the real thing for less than 1k?
