LAKE CHARLES – McNeese Football is making a Return to the Old Guard in hoping to also return to the Glory Days. On Monday, McNeese Vice President and Director of Athletics Heath Schroyer announced the hiring of Cowboy Football legend and Hall of Fame coach Matt Viator to return as the head coach for the Cowboys, a position he held from 2006-2015 and recorded a school record 78 wins, four Southland Conference titles, and five playoff appearances.

thats odd. Hes a great guy but how often does it work out when a coach returns to a school to relive the glory days?
The AD said they had a ton of interest from around the country so idk if i believe him now.
He knows the area and can recruit, just curious how motivated he is

Sim to none. That’s why I’m not overly excited. I hope he’s successful, don’t get me wrong, but this sort of situation never works out.
Hope he’s been taking notes on the transfer portal and NIL (if that’s happens in FCS) as QC at UL

Recycle...McNeese could have hired better

He did really good his first round as McNeese's HC, though he was in his 40s then. Looked for a while like he would turn ULM's football program into one to possibly compete for a SBC title, but went downhill after the 2018 season.
It'll be interesting to see what he can do this go-round.

the sad part is McNeese is very strapped for cash so the few big donors they have swing a huge stick and they want the glory days and the old gang back together.
I guess go ahead and get Stoker, Collins, and Nagle back too

Really don’t think they could have(I’m not a fan of this, FYI). Would you want to work for this AD if you had options?

Guess he wanted to coach in the updated stadium

He gives me creepy used car salesman vibes

If sparking more interest is the goal, most of the local fans seem excited. Not sure about recycling an ex coach, though. Were there that few decent candidates?

Well heck, if they REALLY wanted to bring back the glory days, why not lure Bobby Keasler out of retirement?
And hey, he’s another coach who made the wrong move by leaving Lake Charles for Monroe. FBS or not, that job was NOT a step up for either Keasler or Viator—given the shape the McNeese program was in when they left it.

Both left for ULM to get the pay raise for their last 3 years of drop in the state retirement system.
