So how many spots are still up for grabs in the playoffs?

You have to figure Oregon Texas Georgia Tennessee Indiana notre dame and probably penn state and Ohio state are pretty safe. Is there anyone else that really doesn’t have anything to worry about next week? There’s 3 conference champs not accounted for in that list so really just leaves one open spot for the committee to decide on right?

Feel like it’s probably only one or two really up for grabs

If SMU wins then there’s one spot to decide on.

Big12 is win and in
Mountain West is win and in most likely
ACC is where things could still get funky if Clemson wins. Then you have the question of what happens with SMU.

I feel like a Clemson win may make the committees job pretty easy honestly. Put Clemson in as the 5th conference champ at 11 and give SMU the 12 under the guise of “not wanting to punish them for an extra game”

Think of it as 7 at large.
ND is in. Loser of the SECCG is in. Ohio State is in. Tennessee is in.
The committee might leave Indiana out if they want to make room for Bama. Or punish Penn State if they don't beat Oregon

Absolute locks:
Oregon
Ohio State
Penn State
Indiana
Georgia
Texas
Tennessee
Notre Dame
ACC Champ
BIG 12 Champ
G5 rep
So 1 spot up for grabs. The pecking order will be
1st choice) SMU if they lose
2nd choice) Alabama/Ole Miss/Miami if SMU wins

I won’t be surprised to see a lot of calls go in favor of Clemson in the ACC CG so they get two teams in the CFP

I think the committee can’t leave out the big ten/sec title game participants if you want the championship games to stick around. If you punish Penn state for losing to Oregon by leaving them out then there’s zero incentive for any team to want to play in that game.

As much as pedo state should be punished, I doubt they punish them unless Oregon wins by 42 or something.
If you start to punish teams for the extra game then conferences would be pushed to remove it.
With a 12 team play off I don’t see a need for a conference title game other than money

If you want them to stick around reward the winners and punish the losers… otherwise they’ll be treated like they’re meaningless if both teams are in anyway

This!
If SMU wins, I would take one of the 9-3 SEC teams over Miami. Personally, I would go with Ole Miss. I think they have the highest ceiling of those three teams. I know that's not a way the committee necessarily grades teams, but that's just me. I also understand that since Bama was ranked ahead of Ole Miss last week, the odds of Ole Miss making it are slim to none.

This. SMU is currently ranked in a position to make the playoffs. They shouldn’t be penalized for having to play a 13th game.

A G5 team has to get in
The only other option viable option is Army if they beat Tulane, but getting over UNLV would be highly unlikely.

If SMU keeps it close in a loss, they will be in. Hopefully they don't get blown out

Why would the acc refs give two shits about bama?
