The Joy of Rucking

I was in the army in my youth and carried a rucksack a million miles. I guess I never really thought of it as exercise.
I take a walk everyday at lunch that consists of about 2 miles at a brisk pace. I do it mainly just to get outside as it relaxes me. On top of that I do push ups etc. I'm in pretty good shape.
I'm taking a trip to Europe at the end of the year and we are hitting a few countries. Instead of luggage, I decided I'm going to bring my hiking backpack.
I decided to throw some weight in there and do some miles to get used to it. I put 50lbs in my pack and took off. The next day my legs were sore. I couldn't believe it. I did some reading and it turns out, it's an excellent low impact way to build/retain muscle and torch calories.
If you are already walking everyday, get a pack and drop in some weight. It engages almost your whole body, it's very, very low impact and will burn some serious calories.

If anyone wants to take this seriously you can look at the Bataan Memorial Death March, held at White Sands every year, around April 1st or so. I've done it a few times. They brought survivors from Bataan to be there at the start point. Thinking about what they went through puts 26.2 miles into perspective. I don't know if any of those guys are still with us. I consider it an honor to have done the event, even came in 3rd one year, given the reason why the event is held.

About to start walking with my weighted vest again. My legs never felt stronger than I when I was walking with that thing daily.

ETA: if you have a walking partner, highly recommend one person rucking and the other carry a KB. Switch every 8-10 minutes. Me and my neighbor would do this and it was quite a workout.

Glad it was helpful. I just forgot somehow how much exercise this was.
I'm in my 50's and my wife (former marathon runner) just had one knee replaced and is having the other replaced next year. I like to go for a jog but she gets in to me because she's scared I'm going to damage my knees. Also, I'm built like a powerlifter so it's not easy on the knees. Rucking is perfect.
I'll look into the Bataan event. That sounds like something I'd enjoy. As a side note, my father worked with a guy that was involved with the actual Bataan death march. Some of the stuff my Dad relayed to me from that guy was really something.

Rucking is awesome. I just take my LC-1 and dump a 20kg plate in it. Goruck also has a list of local events all over the world. I think the last one in Houston was a fundraiser for a dog shelter.

I load up one of my old backpacks with 3 liter water bottles. Not super heavy but enough.
Also just enjoy walking in general. Trails, around cities, my driveway or horsepastures. Just feels good.

Reminds me of the Go Ruck Challenge.
I really need to get back into walking with a weighted vest. I walk the dog twice a day, which should be perfect for weighted walks.

I am in the same spot as you. In my 50s. Life long runner but wear and tear is bringing that chapter to an end. Walking is boring and does not get my heart rate up enough. Today I tried rucking. Put 20lbs of free weights in a back pack and hiked for an hour. Stopped worrying about how slow I was going. Felt great. We'll see how sore I am tomorrow. Plan to up the weight gradually and incorporate hand weights.

I'm a few weeks in and am still getting sore. I'm doing between 2 and 3 miles a day. I started out just kind of strolling but I'm starting to pick up some speed and walk a little faster.
It's still great exercise. I might try the hand weights, I hadn't thought of that.

Muscles tired in the right places today and no tendonitis aggravation. Tomorrow will plan to do 4 miles. Hand weights may be pushing it. Will wait a bit on those.

Probably the most enjoyable form of "cardio" I've found. Just put the pack on and go for a stroll. I've been using my Camelbak HAWG for quite a few years but have been considering a GoRuck Rucker.

I'm using a 60 liter Gregory backpack I used to section hike a bit of the Appalachian trail. I have my camping stuff in there but added a 25lb weight wrapped in a blanket so it doesn't flop around. It rides really well and is what I'll use to actually pack stuff around.
Don't overlook a regular hiking pack. You can probably pick one up on Facebook marketplace for fairly cheap.

I don't ruck, per se, but I do kettlebell walks. I'll do them on treadmills at a 8-10% incline and 3.5-4 mph speed. Sometimes a mile. Sometimes 3. Just depends on my time constraints that day. Usually I do a suitcase carry and switch arms every minute or two. It's a hell of a workout for my whole body. It's way harder than I ever thought it would be. Grip strength/endurance seems to be my main weakness. That's usually what requires me to switch hands.

I have the 40lb version and you can take weight out in 4lb. increments. I'll go down to 20lb if I want to go far & fast
I like the balance and feel of having the weight distributed chest/back and it will feel a ton better than dumbbells in a backpack....

Every Sunday, I either ruck or do kettlebell walks following a track I laid out in my backyard, where I carry and walk over a 2x4 to build core strength and improve balance. I call this routine "Carry on My Wayward Sunday." Yes, I’m a nerd.

I think rucking is best fat loss exercise in world.
1) Burns lots of calories
2) Temporarily stalls appetite
3) Doesnt make you super hungry rest of day like high intensity exercise

I actually signed up for this event 2 weeks ago. Will be my first time out there and first real ruck event. Any advice or recommendations?
And actually there is only one living survivor of the Bataan Death March left. Mr James Bollich from Eunice Louisiana. I believe he is 104 now and a graduate of SLI. He wrote a book about his experience called “A Soldiers Journal” and Jocko just did a podcast where he reads parts of the book throughout and talks about it. (Jocko podcast #139). It’s a great listen and I highly recommend it.

I loved rucking and would like to get back to it as soon as these back issues are fixed.
