I saw him live in Brandon Amphitheatre near Jackson a few weeks ago and it was 3 straight hours of non-stop country/psychedelic/rock. What a show.
Johnny Blue Skies and his band are phenomenal.

As someone who has followed the Grateful Dead since 1982, the below text makes me smile. I know where SS is and I’m glad he got on the bus.
Sturgill Simpson said … Jerry Garcia might have saved my life … His Grateful Dead Experience Spurred His Musical Comeback.
After the Dead Ahead Festival, he said:
“I wasn’t doing anything and I was asked, did I want to go to Mexico for a couple of days and play guitar for the Grateful Dead? I wasn’t really familiar with them, because in my early twenties in Kentucky there was a jam band scene which I dismissed as unstructured noodling, and I lumped the Dead into that.
Then when Bob sent me 60 songs I had to learn, I thought, why is this so easy? It’s almost like I could anticipate where Jerry was going. And it was because Jerry played folk, country, bluegrass and blues, the same way I play guitar! He is now my favorite guitar player.“
Sturgill covered The Promise over 10 years ago and it’s an amazing version especially when his vocals cut loose near the ending
During this Recent live concert recording … Sturgill noodles into China Cat Sunflower

It’s crazy how being in the right spot at the right time can totally change your view of musicians and musical listening. Simpson is at home doing nothing. Through mutual friends, he’s asked by Bob Weir if he wants to play at Dead Ahead concerts in Mexico. The rest is history.
Similar “right spot at the right time” happened to John Mayer in 2014. Has Spotify playing in the background and hears Althea which got his attention. He was so intrigued by the song that he played & practiced it for a month then reached out to Bob Weir. Dead & Co was formed 6 months later and they began touring in 2015.
Mayer has said that the hardest GD solo he had to learn was the transition from Help>Slipknot

I saw Sturgill open for Guns & Roses a few years ago in Little Rock.
Sturgill Simpson was by far the best guitarist I saw that day.

All around you is one of the greatest songs ever. He really doesn’t miss.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the latest album but after a few spins it might be one of the best albums from start to stop I’ve ever heard.
