Baseball after fall (position players Catcher and DH)

Projected Starter:
Hernandez
Depth chart:
Luis Hernandez
Blaise Priester
Cade Arrambide
Eddie Yamin
This has been a fun battle to watch and it is still up in the air. I have Hernandez on top because he has been consistent on offense and defense but the other guys have big time potential.
Luis Hernandez- Luis doesn't have a ton of experience at catcher but he has probably been the most polished. 23 HR's last year, hits to all fields, so a lot to like from his offense.
Blaise Priester- This guy has big time power. There is a lot of swing and miss with him but when he contacts the ball good things have happened. The arm is strong but a little inconsistent. Too many balls got past him in the fall and there was the occasional mental error.
Cade Arrambide- The bat has been good this fall with extra base power. The arm is a rocket but not always on the mark. Some freshmen mistakes but he needs to play a lot. He is still in the mix for the primary job and has a great future.
Eddie Yamin- His defense is solid but he will have to hit his way into playing time. He will remind you a lot of Frey and like Frey his offense will have to work for him to play.
DH depth Chart
Blaise Priester
Ethan Frey
Cade Arrambide
Josh Pearson
John Pearson
Eddie Yamin
Ryan Costello
Dalton Beck
Blaise has too much power not to take some swings. Frey and Yamin or big boys that have a lot of potential. Arrambide needs some time on offense as well. Josh offers an experienced left handed bat. John will have to work his way in. Beck and Costello are some other left handed options.

I’m looking forward to our catchers being able to catch strikes. Last year it got ugly. Don’t take strikes away from our pitchers who are working hard.

I read every word of every scrimmage recap, and the catchers struggled at times. are we really good enough defensively at C? Milazzo was a dude, but besides him the lapses back there have been frustrating.

Catcher is definitely the biggest concern for this team.
Overall I think this team has an incredibly high floor due to all the depth, but we only have 1 true proven star in Jones. I think this team may struggle to find its ceiling early in the year due to that lack of star power, but we have a bunch of really high ceiling young guys that will figure it out as the season goes. I expect this to be another one of those teams that takes some lumps during the regular season while Jay figures out the best lineup and rotates guys who are slumping. Im sure some fans will get annoyed with all the tinkering but it should pay off by the time the postseason comes around. But a great team can be completely undone by bad defense behind the plate, so hopefully one of these guys steps up

Who is the best defensive catcher? I only got to see a couple of scrimmages. Arrambide seemed to look good but he had some errant throws. I didn’t get to see Yamin. I didn’t see anything noticeably bad or outstanding with either Priester or Hernandez (which is good). Reading through the scrimmage threads, it seemed like Hernandez threw out a lot of guys on the bases.
I don’t see Jay keeping bats like Hernandez or Priester on the bench. On Monday he hinted at a lot of pinch hitting and substituting players around. It seems like he’ll be doing that just to get everyone in for some reps.

Imma bet Hernandez is the DH and Arrambide is the catcher. Priester and Yamin as an occasional spark plug pinch hitter

This is the biggest question IMO for the upcoming season. We have been spoiled by Milazzo sitting the bench early and then coming in when we needed a defensive first catcher. It depends on who handles the pitching staff the best later in the season that determines who gets the most reps. The bats seem solid at Catcher, maybe excellent.
DH is gonna have to be a rotating position with all the depth. Matchups and timely hitting will be key down the stretch. I am excited to see this team.

quote:I only saw about 25% to 30% of the scrimmages, but it looked to me like Hernandez did the best job framing/receiving, blocking balls in the dirt and off the mark pitches as well as throwing out runners. He looked very comfortable and fluid out there and appeared to be a calming influence on the pitching staff compared to the others.
Who is the best defensive catcher?
The posters who make almost every scrimmage saw much more than I did so maybe my take was limited by the amount of reps I was able to observe.

I would agree with that. Priester might have the best tools but has been inconsistent. It will be interesting to see how much Arrambide will develop during the season.

From all comments from posters and also out of Jay's mouth, Hernandez has been the most consistent of the 3 defensively. I think Yamin is out of the race at this point.
People always concern themselves with who will be the catcher but catcher is a position where you need multiple guys you can count on. Season is too long to use 1 catcher and its also a position that takes a toll on the body. Hopefully each guy will continue to improve. With Preister it almost seems like a laziness/lose focus type of deal behind the plate. Arrambide is just raw and hopefully working with Josh Jordan he continues to improve.

quote:It was quite obvious that Luis handled the position best and although he may not have showed as much fireworks as Priester with the bat, based on his past statistics before transferring, the power is there.

quote:From what I saw, Yamin looked serviceable and is a better backstop than Priester.
Yamin is out of the race at this point.
quote:Absolutely agree 100% with this assessment. Not only can he have negative impacts defensively due to these attributes, but actually saw it bleed over into the batters box with things being called on him like batters interference not running out plays etc. At times, reading his body language, it becomes easy to see that his effort given is not on par with the others.
With Preister it almost seems like a laziness/lose focus type of deal behind the plate.
quote:This kid is the future. He has the tools just needs to adjust to the higher level of this game and be taught how best to utilize the raw talent he is blessed with.
Arrambide is just raw and hopefully working with Josh Jordan he continues to improve.

That’s great to hear. When Jay signed him, I assumed he was a huge bat but lacked in the catching department since he didn’t catch much at Indiana State. Pretty sure he was the first player drafted by Tutko in their series. The staff is obviously high on him.

I agree when talking strictly defense. I meant as someone who can compete with the other 3 for the full time job. Bat just isn't there at this point and I do not think his defense is good enough to make up the difference in bat from the other guys.
Maybe used as a late game defensive guy if they truly believe he is the best defensive catcher on the roster.

quote:Yes. I agree that offensively he has lagged behind the other performance wise this fall.

quote:Not sure that he can hang with the Hernandez and Arrambide's defense. But he is long, moves well and great reach with his height and build. Maybe he can find a niche catching some of our pitchers who tend to be wild if his defense proves to be best.

Personally, I don't see him or anyone beating what Hernandez brings to the position unless things change or injury forces such a substitution. He is definitely more polished, enhances the pitchers' games and makes the plays look effortless.

Classy Doge with a detailed take. Thank you. We all know how tight SEC games are, I just don't want whomever is at catcher to make us hold our breath wondering what we're going to get.

I think we have proven All-SEC caliber players at 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and loads of potential at other positions.

I worry about 3b...Tommy was really really underrated there defensively last year. Braswell has a big arm but a ton of run and rise on his throws and made a good amount of throwing errors last year. Putting him further away could create eveb more issues defensively for him. He had 25% of our errors last year..
