Owned my small biz LLC for just over a year. Now I am being told to file an Beneficial Ownership Information Report (BOIR). At $140!! I never heard of this when signing up with the state. Is this legit? Many thanks...

IIRC That’s a third party charge.

ETA: you can file for free directly. LINK

Disregard. I thought you were asking if BOIR was a real thing, not the $140 to fill it out. Filling it out is free.

FinCEN's BOI is real

This is probably a scam

For more color, there are a lot of scams for new business owners involving getting "reports" that sound very similar to required filings for 100, 200 bucks, etc. They target new LLC filings and then send out official-looking stuff to catch the unwary. It's not technically fraud (or so I assume) because they'll provide you with a report for 150 bucks it's just something you can often do yourself for free or close to it.

Its free and easy to do.

My wife and I have several LLC's and I have filed the BOIR myself for each of them. It only takes a few minutes and costs nothing.

Our accountant sent out a blast to clients offering to do it for a fee, but 5 minutes later I had it done. Easy with the link above.

CPA here. Done a bunch of these. Intrusive but very much required and surprisingly easy to file. Also it is free. If you have a bunch of entities to file then I suggest applying for a FinCEN ID. Once you have that it takes like five mins to file for each entity.

What a crock of shite that filing was. We have known terrorists walking across our southern border on a daily basis and being granted "asylum" but our benevolent government wants every dude who owns an one man AC Repair company working out of his house to file with FINCEN.

We are so fricked up.

I've had several LLCs for record labels over the years.

Even though it's possible to do it by yourself, I had always used some company that would do everything to set it up for around $200 + publishing fee just to avoid the headache.

When I made one in 2019, I discovered that there seems to be 100x more options for companies that do this but no longer a single one that just does it for a flat fee. They are all the same though, mostly "free" if you commit to a couple of thousand dollars of "business services" over the next year.
