I don’t know if this comparison has been made here, but I think it’s on point. Now I don’t know what LSU was offering and exactly the money Michigan has committed. But this is from a Forbes article:

“Some of the first picks in the second round of the draft can expect to make nearly $10 million in their four-year rookie contracts, according to Spotrac, which estimates the first pick of the second round will pull in just under $10 million, while the next eight players picked will make north of $9 million.”

Forbes: NFL Rookie Contracts

So in essence BU, before ever taking a practice snap at the CFB level, has achieved a 2nd round NFL draft pick salary. Now you can argue if he goes to LSU and develops (which based on this season is no guarantee) into an early 1st round pick vs going to UM and possibly running a less QB friendly system, that he would make back the difference plus some in the LSU v UM deals.

But again, none of that is guaranteed. So he just hedged his bets, and if he’s as good as advertised he’ll show out wherever he plays. It’s not like UM isn’t the reigning NC and can’t get players around him to run an offense conducive to his skillset.

As much as we’re all disappointed and/or pissed we’d be celebrating the kid who dumped UM or Bama or whomever to come to LSU. Unfortunately it’s the system now, and IMO it absolutely sucks.

Commitments no longer mean anything, and the mindset of fans needs to change; or we’ll continue to deal in the frustration of the new money game. A commitment, at least in the short term (another topic), is only good when a signature in on the paper and the kid has a backpack on walking to class.

And we are dealing with kids who are still under the influence of parents, aunts, grandmas, and cling-ons who are most of the time going to push for the money. And there’s not much to argue with on that. Of course some (most?) aren’t going to do the right things and will be broke before they know it (and another topic).

We’ll know if LSU is going to be a big player or not soon enough. Hopefully some rules get put in place to rein in the insanity before it crashes.

The last two weeks before signing day is the only time period that matters now. Any commitment before that is meaningless. All the ceremony, hats on the table and all that bullshite is out the door and a relic of the past. Conversations about development, culture, etc are all secondary to how much top recruits will be paid and I'm guessing the product on the field will reflect that.

We all care about LSU. Just trying to shed some light on the situation from a non-emotional fan pov.

I’m a huge LSU fan, but I’d have done the exact same thing he did.

Money talks and $12 million screams.

I’ve said this so many times on this board - this is the fault of the NFL and its players union. Carve out some money for a damn professional league if you are going to put an age restriction on the draft. College wasn’t supposed to be the semi pro league, it wasn’t designed that way and now the NCAA has no answers. Obviously there is a talent pool <21y/o that is worth being paid. These players have no other league in the world to go to, it’s NFL or bust - but the NFL still boxes them out.

And the worst part is the NFL players are too fricking stupid to even understand this dynamic.

ETA - clarifying I am suggesting a developmental league funded by the NFL

Are you suggesting that players go from high school straight to the NFL?

This isn't the NBA or MLB we are talking about. The NFL is a different beast.

I think he's saying there needs to be an NFL-sponsored pro league below the NFL level.

If the narrative posted today is correct, the dad made the decision for him "I don't want to work any more." That tells me the kid will see very little of this money. 10-12 million can be life changing, but it won't last long supporting a lavish lifestyle for an extended family.

No, sorry I meant that there should be a developmental league funded by the NFL. There is nowhere else for these kids to go but college from HS. This restriction is to force someone else to develop them, because they already were.

And yet those leagues have developmental leagues. And other professional leagues across the world. The NFL has crushed competition, and the result is the colleges need to find ways to keep these kids happy, which now includes openly paying them money that are comparable to NFL contracts.

This will become the new norm. Other schools saw how UM walked into LSU's class and plucked the top recruit without much of a fight. I'm sure Texas among others are contacting the rest of the top recruits in this class. Bottom line, it sucks to be poor compared to the Blue Bloods. The system is rigged for the top dogs to stay as the top dogs.

Agree. If this is not reigned in, the super rich will take overt he entire competitive lamdscape. It was the same with the NFL before they put in place spending caps on teams. If they had not, small markets would have gone by the wayside ! You have to believe that congress will step in at some point and try to level the competitive playing field. If not, many smaller colleges will just not be able to play ball !

12M to an incoming freshman, I advise my kid all day long to take that.

Now what I would like to know??? Did this dude ever have intentions of going to Baton Rouge? He played the game and won, Michigan thinks they won? LSU thinks the lost? We will see what happens.

But 100% college football lost, even with LSU rivals laughing, this is a bad road to be on.

Don’t worry, the playoff will reward all those teams that play shite schedules and win weak leagues. Most will lose badly in these games and the same 6-8 teams will play for the National Championship every year. Those 6-8 teams may have a random show up every few years, but mostly it will stay the same blue bloods. This current setting of college football is putrid and will always be left to the wealthiest teams (UM, OSU, Texas, Oregon, Bama) then you have the wealthy shite schools like Ole Miss. Until LSU can compete financially in all aspects of football, this year will be the norm.

Rules have been put in place to CREATE the insanity you are seeing in college football.

You don't like this? Get ready for more.

There's money at stake now.

LSU can compete. Dickhead chooses not to compete.
