Can you be fired for not using someone’s preferred pronouns?

The scenario is a new 6 year old student’s “parent” says that the child is non binary. The “parent” says he/she is also non binary and that the student should be called “they”.

If a teacher refuses to call the child “they” can the teacher be fired for it? It’s a private school.

No. It’s a school run by liberal women. Special school for learning and language differences. Autism, dyslexia, etc.

They indicates plural. If the child’s name is Sybil, they works.

It depends on the school district and the written policies.

Then the answer is yes, absolutely.

Mental illness must be encouraged, just ask any liberal.

Yes. And the teacher can then hire a lawyer and get rich on that decision.

What does the school's manual say. If nothing, then the teacher can call student anything that is not demeaning in the public square.
If said school then fires teacher, teacher gets a lawyer, profit.

If the school is in an "at will" employment state, the school can fire the teacher for any reason that isn't a protected reason (i.e. sex, race, religion, etc.).

Jordan Peterson says 'yes.' His position was that he would call a student by their preferred pronoun if he 'chose' to do so. He objected to the college's mandate that you 'must' use whatever pronoun the student demands.

Oh sure...said school would still have to pay a settlement unless they want to endure the bad publicity.

If it is a private school funded by the tuition and fees then they can set it up however they want to. If it gets Federal funding then the rules change.

I’d respond by saying fine, call me “Mr trannys are dumb”. If a student gets accommodated so should the teacher.

Absolutely! They can certainly file a harassment complaint if they feel it's necessary. While I personally do not believe that's fair or right, it's important to acknowledge that it's something that can happen.
