Who would have you hired in 2021?

I see everyone wanting Woodward fired, but who else was there to take in 2021?

Brian Kelly, but at a backloaded contract to where incentives get him to 12mm a year.
Not frontloaded @ 10mm to where he can sit at his desk and play solitaire all day.

Anyone who isn’t in their mid 60s

Irrelevant… the bottom line is that who we have now is not what we were supposed to get.

Not sure. I wouldn’t have been lazy and tried to find some name synonymous with losing big games though. It’s impossible to say without knowing the back channels and being part of the interview process.

Look. Sometimes good hires on paper don’t work out in practice.
At the times Kelly was probably the best possible option, hell most of us never figured was an option given his success at ND
As much as people here are in love with Kiffin, I don’t think he would have been able to stop the free fall and stabilize the program.
Now, all that said and as good as the hire looked at the time, it clearly isn’t panning out and his first season was his best and since then it’s been downhill.
If he can’t close and land this recruiting class it will get really ugly and it may get that way even if he lands them.
So bottom line, it was a good hire that isn’t working out. Sometimes in college and professional sports it happens.

The lazy hire would've been Napier or Aranda.

I won’t act like he was a known commodity, but Dan Lanning was hired in 2021. The Oregon AD obviously did his homework instead of just throwing money at a guy with years of pretty good records.

60 when hired, to be fair.

This board would have lost their minds if Dan Lanning was hired in 2021.

Kelly was a big name coach. He deserved the contract he got. Some things just dont work out.

We have no idea who all was interested in the job. Hard to say when you don’t know who all was in the running

Napier gets made fun of a lot on here, but if he had worked out you’ve got a coach for 20 years. I fear we are going to be in a cycle of 3-4 year coaches over and over again. The next coach needs to be an up and comer that doesn’t require a long contract with a huge buyout.

Pay him more per yr with less yrs.
Only people who deserve 10 yr guaranteed contracts are coaches like Saban and kirby.
