High end mexican from the folks that run Mi Padres and some of the Greek places around town from what I understand.

I don’t know, but I’m glad the building isn’t an eyesore anymore.

Isn't the Soji dude the one who initiated the renovation? Did he give up and try to sell part of the way through or something? Explains why it sat there for so long if so..

Saw this earlier today. Obviously no idea whether it's going to be worth a shite, but the reno, particularly the rooftop area, looks really nice. I'm pleasantly surprised.

BR doesn't need another Mexican spot and certainly not competing 200 feet away from a popular one.

Best thing this has going for it is the views and weather coming tomorrow night .

I agree in a vacuum, but Mexican is always popular.

Zippy's? Come on, those two aren't even kind of competing with one another in spite of nominally offering roughly the same region of food

Which has kept asses in seats at Tsunami downtown for a couple of decades now, in spite of being fairly mediocre and very overpriced. I have no idea whether the food will be worth a shite, whether they are leveraged to the hilt and will fail, etc. But that space looks really good, at least from the pictures.

I agree that the space looks very cute and picture-worthy but BR has yet to have a top class Mexican restaurant. You're really counting on the people who made Mulberry Market to come and shake up the area?

Again, BR does not do Mexican well, and it's not like they would care about that. Zippy's has a long standing customer base that still comes. The quality is nothing exciting but it does the job.

If I want good elevated Tex-Mex, I go to Blue Corn. If I want something more traditional, I'll probably do La Tienda or the Aztecas food truck. Is any of it the best Mexican ever? Nope. Are all of them significant departures from something like Zippy's? In my opinion, absolutely.

And this isn't to shite on Zippy's. People like what they like, and I'm not judging that. But I can count on one hand the number of times I've eaten at Zippy's in the past decade. I'm just not going to stop there over other places in the area. On the other hand, this place looks like a nice spot to grab drinks after work and maybe grab a bit of food while we're there. I would absolutely go there. And again, this isn't my saying it's "better" or anything like that. I'm trying to convey that they are simply targeting utterly different clientele.

I understand what you're saying. The problem is all of these new restaurants stick around for a few months or a couple of years because they look cool at first and then people realize the food isn't that good so it gets left behind. I would definitely like to try this place out in both warm and cool conditions, granted the food tastes as good as the building looks.

Bumsteer's had mediocre food with no identity and a makeshift downstairs dining room. It felt like a bar that tried to serve food.

An upscale twist on mexican is just what Baton Rouge needs! We already have dozens of low to middle end mexican.

I’m surprised that Cantina Laredo hasn’t already established a location in BR.
