I have a security company to monitor my house. I called them for a couple of exterior cameras to be installed. Would not give me a quote over the phone and sent a tech out. Dude said $1050 for 2 cameras + monthly monitoring fee. I did my best to keep a poker face.

FYI 50% of that is taken off the top for taxes including employment tax, workers comp, GL, etc. Then take more off for materials

Doesn't sound insanely high.

Owl offered my $20k to be his friend and I laughed at how horribly low and offensive that quote was.

Got quoted $4K to find and patch a water leak on the exterior of my house, somewhere between the front deck and the road, or $6K to just run a new line.

I went to Home Depot and fixed it myself for about $100 and a few hours of labor.

Wired in cameras? With a DVR? That's cheap.

A guy quoted me $3500 to cut down a handful of <6" diameter water oak trees, haul off the debris and grind the stumps. I stifled a laugh. I ain't mad and I know people pay it but it was literally less than a days work and it was just a guy with one truck.

I wired my own cameras in May of 2020. 7 of them in total and that was a pain in the arse. Crawling around the attic, running wires, cutting holes, reaching into hard to reach areas while making sure a nail from the roof doesn't go into your head is hard arse work.

I'd charge over $1,000 to do two of them also

This. You don't have a professional company install ring or nest $99 cameras. They are most likely considerably more expensive. Throw in $200-400 each for labor, and its honestly not that bad of a quote at all IMO.

I think OP is going to be really shocked when the next quote comes in at $2500.

ETA: I had a contractor quote me $37,000 to remove the textured ceiling on a remodel. I had a painter quote me and it was $8,900.

Sometimes the quote is a way to say they don't want your business.

Oh I’ve got a good one

I’d been a pharmacist for a few months.. trying to learn the system and how to do things..

This nice older black guy comes up and hands me this .. rubbery thing…. It’s got a slit in the middle and it has short fuzz on it like you dropped it under your couch or something.. so I take it from him and walk out from behind the counter to peruse the OTC aisles to figure out what the hell this is and if we even have it..

He’s a nice guy.. I’m holding this unidentified thing in my hand and he goes “ yeah I put this ( points to what I’m holding) on my dick to keep it hard when I have sex” then it all comes together like the end of the first saw movie… the fuzz.. was the guys pubes… I somehow keep it together and tell the guy, sorry we don’t have those types of products… come back to the counter and bathe in hand sanitizer

Learned a valuable lesson I think about all the time, to never take what some random person hands me . I now make them sit it on the counter before I decide to touch it .

Had a big tree close to my house with bit of a natural lean over my house that was looking weak since the drought last year. After the neighbors had a big tree fall in there’s, I decided to cut mine down.

First guy came out and says $2300. I about shite my pants. Was expecting a couple hundredish. Had two other guys come out. The quotes ranged from $2100-$2500. Guess the joke was on me.

Had the original guy come back out and take care of it.

Over $80K to tear down and rebuild my deck. I did it myself for less than $10K.

$12,800 for a small slab I ended up getting poured for $2,600, which was still a touch high, frankly.

When the guy gave me the estimate, I looked up at him and asked him if he was using 15,000 psi concrete. He looked at me, confused. And I said, “since it’s at least 5x the cost of a 3,000 psi pour.” Then I laughed and asked him why he wasted either of our time coming out.

By the way, concrete guys are the lowest scum of the trades in my experience.

Go to wyze.com. Spend less than $200. Install yourself.

Roku also uses Wyze products, and if you get cameras through Roku you can view video from a Roku on your TV.
