He's almost 80. Clock is ticking.

Does it go away immediately? Linger on a few seasons then fizzle out? Re-configure itself under new production and keep chugging along?

The concept itself has been outdated and running on the brand name for some time now.

if i had to bet on who takes over, Tina Fey or one of the female leads will do it.

It's NBC's most viral product, it will keep going under new management. Possibly a Tina Fey or other alumni who's film and producing career isn't at its height.

When Michaels retires, the usual political suspects will take credit for "forcing him out", no matter how advanced his age is.

i’ve heard Tina Fey’s name get floated around which would be a good move

Idk it seems to be getting funny again. I am seeing a lot of unpolitical skits that have really off the wall Python esque humor to them.

It will just keep going. Is running SNL really that hard? They've been formulaic as hell for decades.

NBC probably values the brand even without ratings, much like The Tonight Show so they probably won't shut it down.

Isn't Lorne completely apolitical?

Jim Breuer on Rogan described him as "very conservative"

No idea

Haven’t watched in 10+ years and forgot it was still on

Should have been cancelled during the Obama 1st term when it shifted from comedy to slanted political propaganda disguised as a sketch comedy program.

People say it's tired and past is prime though historical it was at its lowest in the 80s after Eddie and before the 90s cast came in.. there were some bad cast recently but there have been many good performers too.
I like the current cast.

It feels like they are back to having a good set of writers and screen talent while most of the skits are more apolitical. SNL was at its best when it mocked both sides equally (the 1992 election debate skit and 2000 election debate skit were absolute gold).

no. That was some of the best years with:

Hader
Sukekis
Sandberg
Armisen
Forte
Moynihan
Wig
Killam
McKinnon

The episodes between 2010-2014 were all very good, regardless of who was hosting. Easily top 3 eras of SNL.

As for who would take over? As others have said, Fey would make the most sense. She was head writer and was very successful running 30 Rock.

The rumor is Seth Myers but Lorne said recently he’s not going anywhere anytime soon. He’s a workaholic

And Lorne is a huge democrat supporter and donor and the show is way left.

The one constant in life is always hearing SNL currently sucks but it was great way back when b/c everyone seems to memory hole how many god awful skits there have always been on a show that has to come up w/weekly sketches.
