My OT rant for today….

I don’t care if you went to college or not. I DO NOT like this ludicrous assumption many people have that “college educated” somehow makes one a smarter person or a better person. The two smartest people I know - my Mom and Dad - did not graduate from college. Taking a Biology class or an Algebra class or a Business Intro class does NOT magically make someone a better/smarter person. Just sayin. If I hear the word “college educated” in the context of something important from either side one more time ….as if it means anything, which it does not. The implication is that non-college-educated people are not as smart or somehow not worthy of a voice on important matters…..NOT TRUE! And this is coming from someone that graduated from college. Time to focus on the weekend: BEAT BAMA!

Edited: I’m not going to get into the weeds and over-analyze this, but I think a good argument could probably be made that non-college-educated people are actually a tad more “life savvy” than college educated people because they had a 4-8 year real-life “head start” on those that went to college. Think about it… it makes sense.

Edit#2: in no way am I saying education isn’t important. It certainly is, of course! That’s not my point here in this particular context. I’m merely criticizing the ridiculous belief that SOME people have that non-college-educated people are dumb or redneck or uneducated or somehow “beneath” others that possess a college degree…..They are certainly not!

If anyone EVER tells you they are smarter than you or “better” than you, don’t even respond. Because you don’t have to… they proved in their own words that they aren’t…no response necessary.

In other countries, you have to score high enough on exams to get into college. Here any dipshit that wants to can get into college and the standards to graduate are incredibly low.

Educated does not = intelligence.

Lots of dumb people get degrees.

Lots of intelligent people don't go to college.

I agree.

A college degree does not make you more educated than the next. Especially if it's a non sense major. Congrats on passing meaningless test.

It's a dumb metric. And yes I have a degree

What you went to college for is more important. Doctors, Lawyers (to an extent), Engineers… etc.. are legitimate degrees that can be used in the real world. I consider those individuals college educated.

If you go to college for a Humanities major you are receiving an indoctrination not an education.

Statisticians break people into groups on the assumption that people with similar backgrounds and experiences will act in similar ways. You can disagree with that assumption, but that is their reasoning.

So what do you assume about people that are college educated?

They come from either financially secure families, are disciplined enough to earn a scholarship or both.

They've read similar books and attended similar classes.

They likely work white collar jobs or are in management roles in blue collar fields.

Etc.

You can drill down further and things will get very messy, but for a broad stroke analysis, you can generally predict how the group will lean on any given issue -- of course individuals are always different but we are talking about an educated guess on how the aggregate will feel about any given subject.

I think what people are pissed off about is certain people in the media using the term uneducated with non college educated interchangeably. The stats guys aren't the ones saying that. They know the difference. They don't assume people in the trades are stupid. Their assumption is they respond differently.

But it is true that tradesmen tend to make different decisions than college grads. They have different life experiences.

I deal with a lot of the college grads coming out, if anything they are entitled, lazy and lacking of any common sense. College has been watered down to pass these kids along.

Getting a gender studies degree doesn't make you more intelligent than the mechanic fixing your car. It actually makes you less intelligent, because you paid 10s of thousands of dollars to get a useless piece of paper.
