I’m not personally, but a good friend of mine from college is estranged from his Mom. He has called her a toxic person who has not taken accountability for the shite she put him through and he cut her out of his life completely. Doesn’t even let her see his children, although she tried to take him to court over it, claiming she had a legal right to see them. Didn’t work.

Are you estranged from a parent or both? Do you know anyone who completely cut ties with their parents? I know for a lot of us, it can be hard to imagine cutting our Mom and Dad out of our life, but it seems to be happening more and more in society.

Mine bounced when I was young, so yes. But not by choice.

It's sad but some people are truly terrible and need to be cut out.

There are parents that are toxic and distance is needed.

I am currently with my mother. She’s out of the country though, so it makes it easier.

I feel like every woman gets into a fight with their mother that lasts at least a year at some point in their life

I’m 90% there with my Mom and 100% there with one sister.

Both self absorbed narcissists who don’t own any of their shite, while projecting all of their issues and insecurities on everyone else.

My parents don’t talk to each of there moms. ( my grandfathers are both dead) dad is close with one of his sisters the other one is nuts.

My mom only talks to one of her sisters and that’s it. I still talk to my my uncles on my mom side when they call or when I see them in public.

Both grandmothers haven’t sent all my kids. I tried to have a relationship but they always try to talk about my parents and found out info and it got old. I feel like if they really wanted to see me they can call me they have my number but they don’t call.

I have an uncle who cut his son and his son's family out of his life. He has two grandkids he rarely saw. They're grown now, and they've only seen him a handful of times. It was all because he married a black girl and my uncle couldn't handle it. Or, let's say that my uncle's second wife couldn't handle it and my uncle is the definition of a pussy-whipped man, even his ex-wife says that (she's the mother of the cousin who was disowned). She left my uncle because in her words he is a, "A weak man, and she needed someone with a backbone." He's a dick, and I will always hold the way he acted towards those children against him.

His ex-wife, my ex-aunt, is one of my favorite people in the world.

I’m very low contact with my mom. I think she has borderline personality disorder. She put myself and my siblings through hell well into our adulthood. Multiple marriages and divorces, can’t hold a job, suicide threats, always needs money, very manipulative, never takes responsibility for her actions, fake illnesses, etc.

A few months ago I finally told her that I think she’s BPD and should see a mental health professional to figure out what her diagnosis is. Haven’t spoken to her since then, but she didn’t freak out on me like I thought she would when I told her. If nothing else, I felt much better after finally being honest with her.

You don’t get to choose your family. Unfortunately strangers sometimes will treat you better.

My husband is estranged from his parents.

It’s been 9 years, and just the other day the 17 year old asked ‘is Dad not as much of an arse hole anymore since he doesn’t talk to his parents?’

Smart kid.

When I hear about families like that, I thank God my folks are loving, kind, supportive parents whose only flaws are that they are simply human beings and fallible like anyone else with day to day stuff.

I'd say your good friend is correct in his assessment.

I always thought I hated holidays. Turns out I hate mandatory visits with my parents.

That’s a shame, but i understand.

When #6 was born they came to the hospital to make sure it was his.

Which, think what you want, but you don’t have to tell me this in the hospital room.
