Doing a bit of traveling close to Thanksgiving. Will be in the Tallahassee area and want to take a day to go somewhere in Flordia we have not been. I have 2 teenagers. It will be a 1 day visit. Arrive at lunchtime and stay the night before leaving the next morning.

I'm thinking of making the drive to Amelia Island. My thoughts were to do the horseback ride on the beach and maybe a boat tour. Let the kids see the Atlantic and just experience some place new.

Does anyone have any experience at Amelia Island? Any areas of note - hotels, restaurants, shopping, etc.?

If you & your family are used to the panhandle beaches, prepare for disappointment. Having said that, there are some beautiful resorts on Amelia Island, and checkout downtown Fernandina, really cool area.

Another option might be St Augustine, fl. But Amelia Island is fine.

We won’t be there but for one afternoon/evening. Not looking into a beach trip since it’s November, but more a sight seeing trip.

I considered St Augustine and I would like to go there myself, but kind of felt like one afternoon would be rushing it.

St Augustine is Awesome- and a lot can be done in one day.

Tour the fort, hang out in historic district or whatever they call it, take a ghost/spooky tour at night, have a nice dinner.

You could stay on riverfront, or the Embassy Suites is super nice 5 mins away on St Aug beach. Nice bar, good breakfast buffet included with resort fee, happy hour with free drinks / snacks.

We stayed 3 nights this summer.

St Augustine it’s pretty small. You could do a lot and get a good feel for the place in a day.

Travel time from Tallahassee to St Augie or Fernandina is about the same.

St Augie may be a bit more fun for the teens.

I have always said that the Alligator Farm in St Augie is one of the places that I went to that most exceeded my expectations going into it. It was great.

You can turn your teens loose on St George Street and they can have a good time for a few hours. There is a lot of cheesy/touristy stuff there, but there is also a lot of history there. The Christmas lights will be fantastic. Anastasia State Park is a great place to go to the beach - the water temp will probably be around 72 degrees. Still doable on a warm day.

Fernandina has a really nice waterfront/downtown area and is probably a little more laid back. As someone mentioned, there are some nice resorts in the area that are the main attractIon for golf, tennis, and beaches, so the downtown is a little less touristy.

I haven't been to either in over 10 years, so I don't know what has changed.

We live just of the island, so my 2 cents ($350 OT ) we do have a nice Fort Clinch, nice drive into it under canopy oak trees, you have beach access to the Atlantic on the right side and the Fort overlooks the St. Mary River/Sound with Cumberland Island across.
Center Street is a nice laid back area with a lot of tourist shops, restaurants, Gregor McGregor's Mini Links putt putt serves food and drinks, Duck Pinz bowling ( 4 lanes, balls slightly larger than crocket) serves drinks, kayaking available in the river, and creeks, boat tours inshore and offshore. Rent golf carts, scooters to ride around town. Hampton inn downtown just off Center St.
If I can provide any more info let me know.

Update: The family didn’t care about horseback riding and boat riding, so we are going to go to St Augustine instead. We will have one day. Plan on seeing the beach/ocean, then hitting all the historic sites. We will finish off by hanging out shopping and dining.

Soon as you arrive jump on the Trolley and get your bearings and learn the history of the oldest city in the USA and there is a lot of it. After the trolley just walk to the St. George Street and enjoy then venture across the street to the fort or go over to the Flagler college campus it has a lot of history also. Plenty of places to eat right in that area. St. Augustine has a little European city vibe with lots to do and see. Your kids should enjoy it also because there alot of college kids and tourists in that area

Centre St is the main hub... If you are there for only afternoon evening.. That can kill enough time window shopping walking along the docs.

Ft Clinch is a nice hour/two ( depending on how intensive you are about reading the details on every marker) on occasion you can see the wild horses on Cumberland Island (across the St Mary's River)
