We will be in New York starting the night before Thanksgiving staying 5 nights, departing the Monday after Thanksgiving.

Our hotel in Midtown is about 3 blocks away from 6th Avenue where the parade passes down.

I've read get there early... but has anyone ever watched the parade on 6th? How early do we need to get there to get a decent spot? I'm used to Mardi Gras parades where we bring chairs and sit out there all day, so this will be a different experience for us.

Most of the info I've found online talks about watching it along Central Park / Upper West side, but that seems silly to fight getting all the way out there if we can just walk 3 blocks to see it.

Any adviuce abyone can provide will be appreciated.

Most of our remaining days have been planned out, but I do have a few other questions:

1) Any suggestions for a Thanksgiving dinner?
2) Any suggestions for other "can't miss" dining places? We are not a big sit down fancy meal type people, I know the kids will want to get bagles, New York style pizza, hot dogs in Central Park, etc.
3) Any good resources on using the subway / passes to get around?
4( Transport to/from LGA - Uber? Shuttle? Train/subway?

Thank you!

Google Maps works fine to get you from place to place on the subway. You can just tap to pay using phone or credit card. (I would usually hand my daughter a CC as we approach a turnstile and then collect it from her after, to speed everything up)

Uber works well - I will usually schedule a car service to and from the airport(s).

The train sucks because you have to go bus > train > maybe a transfer somewhere (depending on where your hotel is) > street walking, all while schlepping your shite around. Just get an Uber or car service and have them drop you at the front door. (It's BETTER from JFK and Newark, but only if your subway stop is near your hotel.)

I'll be holding a balloon in the parade! Here's what I've noticed from previous years...

The side streets might be 10-20 people deep but on the sidewalks its only 2 or 3 people. If you get out there 1 or 2 hours early you should be able to find a spot right up on the fence.

What kinds of dining are you into? NY is known for it's Italian food. My personal favorite place is Eatily over by the flat iron building. It's like a big Italian grocery store with 10-20 person bars spread around the place with unique menus. There's also a jillion amazing steakhouses.

The subway is very easy to navigate. Get yourself a metro card.

From LGA, Uber. The shuttle to the long island rail road is a bitch. It won't save you time and probably cost about the same.

We were lined up on the sidewalk on the East side with St. Patricks Cathedral. Got there a couple hours before and were about 4 or 5 deep. Not too bad. The great event is to go the night before on the Upper West side around The Dakota area (John Lennon Apt) and watch them blow up and set up most of the floats. It’s a fun and festive atmosphere. They line the floats up and partially inflate or lay them out. It’s on the streets perpendicular to Central Park. We got up about 5:30 am and headed to Ess A Bagel for some breakfast and Coffee first. Enjoy!

Thanksgiving Dinner we did in a little home style diner on the East side. No clue the name, sorry. We just walked around and found a place for Lunch.

Study the subway map ahead of time. You buy a card a load it is how I think it still works.

Don’t be shy about using the bus with the same card. Busses can be easy and much faster than the subway and I love riding the subway.

For the parade, get out there earlier than you think.

I got out there at 6 am and was five people deep.

I can't help with the parade both times I have sat in the actual Macy's grandstands near central park.

As for thanksgiving dinner, hard to beat the plaza. Tavern on the Green also does a great touristy thanksgiving spread. I have not done Keen's for Thanksgiving but I love it and know they do a Thanksgiving dinner. I have done the Smith for thanksgiving and it was solid.

There’s a building across from the Hilton that has a giant planter in front of it. It’s about 4 feet above the sidewalk. We would traditionally get there early and sit on than stand when the parade comes by. It’s like 3 feet from the sidewalk. Our family would usually get out there around 6am. A bit of a wait for the parade to pass by. There’s a few spots like that but I typically found the crowds at 50th - 54th to be less dense than the lower streets.

John’s on Bleeker and Lombards on Spring are very famous and almost always crowded.
A place I really like that serves coal oven pizza is Angelo’s on 57th. If you’re staying in that area it has great pizza imo.

Probably too late to find anywhere like this, but when my family did it, they found somewhere that they could rent a spot to rent a window and didn't have to stand in a crowd. Probably pretty pricey. That's about the only way I would do this parade, maybe in a reserved grandstand.
