Would either be even a blip on our radar if they didn't date "toxic" men, so they could write a song/album about them?

I wouldn’t say Alanis owes her career to “toxic exes”. She was groomed by a Hollywood pedo while she was trying to make it and used music to express her frustration. She is more talented in every way than Taylor. She’s also a very talented vocalist.

Show me something Swift has done that’s half as impressive as this:

Swift sold her soul to be the face for generic soulless pop music.

Yes, especially Alanis. Her vocals on unplugged albums deserve attention on their own. She wrote every song on jagged little pill, glen ballard just helped arrange them in parts. Alanis is deserving of plenty of praise for her music.

No she's not. Alanis can actually sing.

The “only” example I’ll give of Taylor being great is my favorite song of hers ‘ all too well’

It’s a masterpiece .

quote:

And maybe we got lost in translation
Maybe I asked for too much
But maybe this thing was a masterpiece 'til you tore it all up
Running scared, I was there I remember it all too well
And you call me up again just to break me like a promise
So casually cruel in the name of being honest
I'm a crumpled up piece of paper lying here
'Cause I remember it all, all, all Too well

It’s her best song and it’s worth a listen for
Those who haven’t heard it

Swift's lyrics are "deep" for high school girls and suburban soccer moms, but it's better than most of the other artists in her tier of pop music. She is a fantastic saleswoman with how she interacts with her fanbase through the Easter eggs she hides in her songs/social media/physical album covers/etc. Her transition from another random country radio artist to billionaire biggest pop star in the world is sort of impressive as well.

Is being the biggest pop star in the history of music considered impressive? What about being a billionaire? Maybe selling out any football/soccer stadium in the world multiple nights in a row. Are any of these considered impressive?

That has nothing to do with being an accomplished musician. Musically, no. Being the most popular doesn’t make you a good musician. The thread title claims Taylor is a knockoff Alanis. My response is that they have very little if anything in common and Alanis is much more musically talented.

Swift is a 30-something year old woman who acts like she's 16, who makes music for 30-something year old women who act like they're 16.

You need to learn to phrase your questions better. You simply asked

quote:

The reply you got is a valid answer to your question.

Yet another valid answer to the actual question you asked, see above.

quote:

quote:

Maybe selling out any football/soccer stadium in the world multiple nights in a row. Are any of these considered impressive?

Has nothing to do with her musical ability.

Yet again, see above.

Taylor Swift's command of pop culture is impressive. She does not lack talent, she simply exploits something that a large enough group of people are willing to buy.

I do think the premise of the thread is somewhat silly, though. I also think that Morrisette is immensely more talented than Swift but that is not necessarily a knock on Swift. Alanis is/was spectacular IMO.

Yes her managers and executives and label representatives are impressive.

And, No, I do not consider amassing fame and money as impressive as musical or artistic ability. Anyone can gather money and fame. Vocal talent is something you have to actively choose to nurture and develop.

The girl can sing
gimme a break
She doesn’t have a Florence Welch voice but she can sing

And she can play the piano and guitar.

And she can write music.

I just wish she would stay out of politics.

Also I have never for a second compared her to Alanis. Completely different music styles and personas

That's why everyone is this successful. You are blinded by your hatred.

So maybe you should ask better questions.

Anyone can gather money and fame.

Sure, that's why everyone who wants to be rich and successful has done so at her level.

Vocal talent is something you have to actively choose to nurture and develop.

Are you so invested in not liking her that you cannot see that she is talented?

It’s the age old debate -

How do you weigh

the most technically advanced guitar solo that no one wants to listen to VS the greatest pop hit in the world that resonates with everyone despite being “simpler”

Both are very much musical skills

Alanis wrote angsty songs that resonated with angsty 90s gals. She had a good voice and that was before autotune. She had mass appeal but was very slightly on the “edgy” side after her experience as a mass-produced pop star.

Taylor writes simple songs that appeal to simple gals. Her fans are probably the normal, wholesome, popular types. That’s what they like. Taylor has changed with the times and kept up with current trends. She is also a prolific songwriter and (i think) even wrote songs for that ex boyfriend of hers under a fake name.

Comparing them isn’t apples to oranges but maybe 2 different kinds of apples. Americans love apples.

she can't though.
not that it matters I think all her pop stuff is produced and she has an autotune mike/lipsyching
but she is about the only time i've noticed a singer be very flat and out of tune, hearing a song on the radio not even knowing who it was. this was earlier in the more country era.
but she was writing decent country songs especially for a young girl and that made up for it
now i don't think she's even really writing them. she's all image, a brand made in the boardroom. autotune, session musicians, and it's no big secret that popstars have shadow songwriters

Some people forget that Jagged Little Pill is her third album.

Her first two releases were pretty basic dance/pop and she "reinvented" herself. The voice was there, though.

The first time I heard You Oughta Know I thought she was retarded. The vocals were laughably bad to me. Some of her other songs are ok though.
