Debating a self drive tour of Ireland for 11 days at $1700 per person vs having a driver drive us (wife, no pics.. and two teenage girls) at a cost of $3700 per person. Is it worth the extra 8k to have a driver who knows all the stuff to do or should we drive ourselves, in a foreign country, on the wrong side of the road

Known people who have drove the island, I see no reason to pay the extra for a driver.

For $5k I’ll do some research and drive you. It’s Ireland, not China. Drive it and your memories will be 10x better.

My wife and I drove. Took only a hour to adjust to driving on the right side. We had a blast driving around the island.

Friend,

When you can do something on your own versus having someone do it for you, at least on vacation, choose the former. I could never spend 11 days in Ireland, though. I’ve spent three days in Dublin on three different trips, and half a day is more than sufficient there. The rest of the tiny island is not worth more than a few days. Hop on a Ryan Air jet and go somewhere more interesting for the remainder of your time in Europe.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

Hell no to the driver. Bring a paper map. The roads are fine. This gives you the option to stop at anything you think seems cool (plenty of stuff there that won’t show up on maps, because they’re random ruins.) you also get to slam the car into park and have a picnic anywhere you want.

Two things to remember: rent the smallest car you can. I rented a Micra my first time and remember a spot or two where I had to fold the mirrors in to fit.

Speed limits are just that, limits. They don’t tend to do the American thing of warning you 25x that there was a soft left turn coming, graduallly reducing speed over 1/2 mile. Nah, the speed limit is 80, and if you’re not paying close enough attention to the road, it’s your fault if you miss the turn and wind up in the peat.

If you think there may be sheep nearby, there probably are.

I drove when we were there this summer. It takes a couple days to get used to but it’s not that hard.

Driving all over Ireland by yourself sounds way more exciting than going with a driver

It just depends on your budget here. If you are talking a $50k trip where there's no budget holding you back on other expenses, then sure pay for it. If that $8k can be used to splurge on some other items, I'd do that.

A driver for a day or two would probably be very helpful, but personally I would HATE not having the privacy for 11 days.

Ww spent three weeks between Scotland and Ireland and had our own car in both countries. In an hour you will have driving on the wrong side of the road down with no issues but do watch out for the traffic circles We will get a tour guide for certain areas such as the Ring of Kerry or Dingle Peninsula but otherwise no issue with driving yourself.

Do the ring of Kerry heading in the opposite direction as everyone else.

Every time I rented, there was a giant fluorescent arrow reflected onto windshield like a HUD reminding me which side of the road to drive on.

My family did a driving tour of Ireland. It was not difficult. We had no problems.
