Imagine an America so aligned that an incumbent President could win 49 States ( 1984) .

That must seem absolutely bizarre to everyone under a certain age. When the literal most Republican county in the United States was Orange County, California.
Electoral College: 525 to 13.
54.5 million votes to 37.5 million votes.
59% to 41%.
I remember it well. My first vote was for Uncle Ronnie.

Compare it to the zeitgeist today.
I wasn't born yet. Tell us stories, old man.

There was a somewhat unbiased media back then.

And just think, he had Alzheimer’s as early as the end of his first term and was still better functioning than Biden at any point in his presidency..

At first I was all like, gag me with a spoon. But then I was like whoa that’s gnarly . And then I hopped in my Honda Prelude with Nancy Moistpants and went to the Journey concert . It was rad.

We are voting our way into socialism, but we won’t vote our way out.

And Reagan was considered "divisive" by the Left.
He was the second most fearmongered about president in my lifetime behind Trump. He was going to get us nuked. Shows like The Day After were meant to scare the shite out of the public. But people were less distracted back then and paid attention to their wallet and not some dweeb on YouTube talking about inane foolishness.

Not really. He went around the media with press conferences to take his case directly to the American people. He used humor to get his point across and turned the country around. We went from malaise under Carter to morning in America. He defeated the Soviet Empire without firing a shot. Extremely likable, talented speaker and courageous.

Hell yea. I was born a decade too late.
Do you get the same vibes these days? I feel something but I have no reference point.

quote:bullshite. I remember watching the election results. When Reagan started smashing, my first thought was how in the hell is this guy actually even winning when all I've seen on TV for the last 4 years is how terrible a president he is. I didn't know much about what was going on but the big three networks were quite consistent on their opinion of Reagan and I believed them because there was no where else to go

Oh and the AIDS propaganda was classic Leftist Agitprop. They hung that on him too.

It’s amazing when I look back on that era at how cohesive and patriotic this country was then. I was a kid in the 70’s and teenager in the 80’s. The shift in the mood of this country from the late 70’s to the early 80’s was a sight to behold. It went from post Vietnam pessimism to over the top optimism in a span of 3-4 years. Sadly I don’t think we will see days like that again.
