Arkansas Defense Hasn't Played a Good QB Yet

Of their 4 P4 opponents this year, none of them were good enough to put pressure on their secondary.

OK State - Alan Bowman - was just benched after losing 3 straight games due to lack of offensive production

Auburn - they played both QBs that day - They benched Payton Thorne a week before for Hank Brown. Then, Hank Brown was so awful in the 1st half against Arkansas (3 INTs) that they went back to Thorne who actually had a little success in the 2nd half.

Texas A&M - Weigman was hurt this game, so Marcel Reed got the start. He's just a decent athlete that they did not ask to do very much. He was very conservative in this game and did just enough.

Tennessee - Iamaleava is the most talented QB they've played this year, but the compliments stop there. Nico has been pretty bad in his first few SEC starts. He looks slow to read defenses, holds the ball too long, and is only averaging 173 pypg in conference despite having some really good talent around him and an elite offensive coach.

I do believe Arkansas has a solid defense, but Nussmeier is head and shoulders better than those guys as a passer. I see us being able to have our way in the passing game, especially if the running game gives us just a little bit of life.

it is wild how little we know about teams half way through the season because of week OOc schedules

Have you factored in that maybe the QB play against them has been bad because they are are a really good defense?

considered it, but the truth is that these guys are not good even when they aren't playing arkansas, so I fear the QBs truly stink

Look at that list. All but Nico have been arse all season against everyone. And Nico is a freshman and didn’t look great vs OU or UF, either. Nuss will definitely be their biggest test, and their secondary still hasn’t been amazing, even against those QBs.

You've got a point. Competition matters, and no better example of this than to look at Ole Miss coming in with what looked like a sack machine defense against inferior opponents only to end up with ZERO sacks vs LSU who has a decent OL.
You're point is well made. I think it has merit. It'd be cool if Nuss opens up and just goes off. I also think we'll run on them. Hopefully this is the week we get our run game going.

Have you factored in that those QB’s have been bad in ~16 other total games as well?

The secondary is definitely the weakness of the defense, and that thought has been on our fans’ minds as well. We played three freshman QBs in a row in SEC play which is rare.

I’m curious how much pressure we bring in this one. Travis Williams usually loves blitzing but the LSU OL is so good at pass blocking that I almost wonder if a softer coverage would be better to give the secondary some more help on the back end if it doesn’t result in pressure either way.

Think I heard something today about y'alls best DB is unlikely to play? Honestly haven't watched much of Arkansas this year. Is this a big loss?

Yeah, Jaylon Braxton is our best CB and he’s been out since week 2 with a bone bruise and tendinitis. He hasn’t played most of the season anyway but we’d probably need him more in this game than any other so far. Sounds like a similar situation to Hilton on your side where we’ve expected him back for weeks but he can’t quite get healthy.

Playing this style is hoping that Nuss decides to force it deep and into coverage. If he decides to take the check down to Taylor or the RB FOR 3-7 yards a pop it won’t work. This may be the proper defense to play because of the receiving skill LSU has.

What I’m more worried about is a running QB stressing the defense and forcing them to decide a gap/responsibility and that responsibility being wrong (South Carolina)

Need to add that weak LT UTenn has. OTOH, the Arky DE is pretty good.

Brad Powers, Payne, and Todd Fuhrman lamented on today's Bet the Board podcast of just the same.

Powers said in handicapping the Ga-Tex game, that he can't recall ever being at Wk 7 of a season and still not being able to clearly know where the top contenders truly stood. Mentioning NIL thinning depth at places like Ga and Bama,etc..and the implied continuity issues that the turnover creates.

Hopefully Nuss snaps out of whatever was happening against OM or this streak will continue

OM does have a good DL and can get to the QB. LSU has given up 2 sacks all year. I think this speaks more to LSU and not OM.

That weak LT is Lance Heard. Apparently he's slow and out of shape. He didn't want to sit behind Campbell, but it looks like he's not ready to be a starter yet.

It really is. Arky beat Tenn, but is Tenn any good? They struggled with a bad OU and UF team. Nico is throwing for under 200 ypg. Bama is erratic. UGA looks beatable and their D is below Kirby standards. Texas looks like clearly the best team, but have they really beaten a complete team yet?

It may take a couple more games to sort this out and even though LSU has a lot of weaknesses and I did not think they had the talent to be a true contender, they have a real shot to make some noise if they keep improving and don't lose focus.

If you think that this isn’t gonna be a very tough game…you’re extremely naive
