They're pretty upset about it, most were in agreement that he was their best assistant coach, and likely the best secondary coach in the nation. Also, here's a pretty good quote from one USCe fan:
Another good one:
quote:
Right now i would take the equipment manager position at LSU over any position here. Pretty sure it would be a step-up.
Another good one:
quote:
I understand leaving for the money but it hurts when they leave and then talk about how they will have a chance to compete for a National Championship at the school they are going to. It is like they are saying they cant compete for one at the school that they are leaving, which happens to be here.

Some of them suggest that he got fired, rather than quit to take the LSU job:

nice comments from someone who got fired

Also, if you look at this realistically...Who's got the better chance of winning a championship? USC or LSU...They've only won 2 BCS championships...
quote:
Guess he was watching "how special" they were instead of his "own" position player going to class. I'm surprised he is stiil here after SOS called him out in the press conference after the Kentucky game 2 years ago. And remember the clumson debacle last year, 4th and 20 for a 1st down...No not feeling the loss.
quote:
If there is something that has happened that makes you think the chance of winning a national championship here is the same as it is at LSU, please share it.
quote:
Mo money, plus he felt that LSU will probably win another BCS Championship before we will. Not sure why he would think that. Perhaps the performance of the two teams in the most recent bowls?
quote:
Anyone who doesn't understand this is delusional....and truthfully, he is worth every dime. Best d-backs coach we have ever or may ever have.

I'm hoping this is sarcasm?

From a co-worker who attended USC and is a diehard Cocks fan:
For what it's worth, I know a guy that has very good connections to USC. The deal on Cooper is that he got fired before the Outback bowl but asked to stay on the staff and was allowed to.
The reason being, he and the DC didn't get along too well and Cooper was becoming a bit of a wedge on the staff. It's not a secret as to why 2 of the 3 kids we're going to lose early to the NFL were DB's. Cooper wasn't helping us too much there. The final straw was when he offered a scholarship to a kid named Jonothan Davis from Georgia.. The kid is supposed to be a very good player, but he's tiny and a bit of risk. Cooper offered and the kid accepted without anybody on the staff even knowing about it. The DC was ticked at that so they canned Cooper.
Now, the deal on Cooper is that he's a very good secondary coach. I mean, he can flat out develop players at that spot. You start looking at the number of DB's that are in the NFL right now from lowly South Carolina. It's a fairly long list. Without question, the best position group we've had has consistently been the DB's.
He's also a very good talent evaulator. Some of our best players are kids that weren't highly rated in high school but he saw them and got them to commit. Guys like Eric Norwood come to mind.
The main knock on him is that he's a lazy recruiter. He'll find those diamonds in the rough but he's not going to kill himself on the trail. It's just not his thing.
I think in the end, he just needed to move on. He's been here a while. You're getting a very good coach, albeit one that wants to be a DC or a head coach again very soon. He can coach, but he can't recruit. But at LSU, you don't need another recruiter.

Few quotes:

Bad news: Ron Cooper has been hired away by LSU. This is a serious blow IMO as Cooper was an excellent asst. coach and a good recruiter / evaluator.
quote:
wtf... when did that happen? ouch.

losing cooper is a big hit though. no doubt.

I always no where to come for the inside scoop.

dude just had to stay on to get the chance to coach usc in the great Outback bowl against iowa. I understand not wanting to pass that opportunity up

Les better keep him in check. We don't want a position coach pumping out players so good that they consider leaving early for the NFL draft.

ok so a DC can offer an official scholarship and have a kid accept it without the rest of the staff knowing?
cracka please.
