I took a look at the video to get a refresh on how Kiffin attacked us last year and my God it's still miserable to watch that defense. It genuinely may be the worst defensive performance I've ever seen.

We missed sooooo many tackles. Like absolutely whiffed and got spun around. Multiples times there were defenders that ran into each other and fell down. Multiple teams they took poor angles that should have been minimal gains that turned into explosive gains, multiple times the linebackers bit on motion and went the wrong way.

If there's good news it's that many of the players they really picked on aren't here anymore

LaTerrence Welch
Ryan Yaites
Andre Sam
Omar Speights
Denver Harris

These guys all had just miserable games either in reacting to a play and getting into position or tackling. Kiffin did a masterful job and drug his nuts across the defense. This wasn't chucking deep balls and losing 1 on 1 man coverages. He attacked our biggest weaknesses, moved the defense laterally throwing screens and slants and dared our guys to make tackles in space. They couldn't do it.

Positive spin, it would be hard to be that disastrously bad again. To whiff on that many tackles and take that many bad angles. But again if there's an area that really concerns me it's the lateral challenges, having linebackers read and react. Having Burns and Ryan have to crash down and make a tackle.

I won't blame anyone who's not ready to relive that trauma.

Every team was able to drag their nuts on that defense last year

Many would point to the Mississippi State game in 2020 but we had a pick 6 and a FF in that game IIRC

We didn’t look close last year at any point in trying to stop Ole Miss or do anything remotely disruptive. Paired with the offensive performance we got in that game I feel confident that this was the worst defensive performance in LSU history.

Just compare the offenses. Daniels was hitting deep shots in tight coverage for TDs and Dart just had dudes open with no one around them. Kiffin absolutely clowned House.

It's off topic from the defense but once again i gotta say I still absolutely loathe that 3rd and 5 play call from Denbrock with 3:30 left on their side of the 50.

Thomas and Lacy up at the top of the field, they motion Malik across the formation, roll Jayden out to that side of the field. To Denbrocks credit, he had him, JD should have thrown the ball and had the first down. But the whole play relied on getting that ball out on time to that one guy or else the play is dead and there are no options.

Once JD hesitated, Malik was blanketed, Lacy and BTJ are blocking, you've pulled the entire defense to one side of the field so he can't scramble. Yeah he should have had it if he executes as he should but I hate the design on a gotta have it situation, only having one outlet, eliminating BTJ or Jaydens legs.

Man I hated this game.

And yet if our offense can score late in the game we win

Not the offenses fault but we had our chance and couldn’t make it count. Same thing we have struggled with this year.

LaTerrence Welch
Was abused all game to the point that the staff threw Stamps and Yaites into the game.

Ryan Yaites
Was a true freshman, I can't fault him for struggling against Tre Harris.

Andre Sam
Underrated player from last year. The only player in the secondary that wasn't afraid of contact. Would be an immediate improvement over the safety play this year.

Omar Speights
Looks like he was playing in bowling shoes the way he was slipping and sliding all over the field.

Denver Harris
No tears lost when he transferred out. The Ole Miss game broke him.

As bad as the defense was, LSU could have finished that game by milking more time and not snapping the ball with 20-something seconds on the play clock up 9 with 5-6 minutes to go. And the failure to get the finish the drive up 2 late was also a killer.

When you score 49, you should win. But better late fame management might have sealed that game.

What was worse was that OM pretty much only ran 3-5 plays all game. Kiffin even admitted it after. Every play they had one or two base running calls to start, then would change depending on how the defense lined up. Since House was a functional retard and never changed the defense, OM ran a HS jamboree game plan and put up conference records.

I couldn’t disagree more on Andre Sam.

He couldn’t help in coverage and wanted to make the big hit with his head down.

I would take Spears over him. If it wasn’t for Burns or Ryan…Andre Sam was easily the worst starting safety for LSU in the last 25 years.

We have been in Safety Hell for Five straight seasons. It used to be our calling card.

While I think we still have a talent deficiency in areas of our defense, where I feel we have some improvements from last year are:

- Speed, we do seem to run to the ball better
- tackling overall seems to have improved
- Edge rushing and Dline in general getting pressure.

I think they are attacking vs thinking. Las years d looked like it was standing still evaluating the play and receivers were blowing by them.

One thing I’ve heard Kelly say over and over when talking about of the younger guys on D seeing time and guys in general is “assignment accurate” or something like that.

Play fast and in your assignment and good things can happen. Hopefully we get dart off his mark and makes some big plays to keep the crown hyped up. I know I’m ready to be hoarse all week.

I haven’t watched any of it since it happened, but how close was Hilton to coming down with that last pass for the game winning touchdown?

Not a criticism of Chris, just would have been an extra, special moment for Jayden’s LSU legacy.

I think people have (rightfully so) forgotten how just how terrible that defense was.

Ole Miss converted 75% for the game on money downs. We absolutely gave the game away.

Worst I’ve felt after a loss in a good while.

Omar is the puzzler. Was useless last year and went undrafted, but is playing for the LA Rams now on the active roster.

I still don’t get why he didn’t throw it. All I got is he kinda lost Malik in his line of sight and waited for him to clear the OL.
