Social media: The idiot’s launch pad

In stumbling upon a video on IG, I was witness (briefly) to a person pontificating about the gov’t controlling the weather. You know about these creatures.
She gets more granular on various angles related to government mechanics and so forth (all categorically incorrect), and I bow out.
Social media has provided these mentally-challenged, imbeciles some sense that they know anything. It goes beyond government into nutrition, medicine, paleontology (dinosaur deniers), etc. And, the vast majority have jack shite for an education. They just know they know everything.
My fricking barber doesn’t believe in dinosaurs and explained to me the full web of conspiracy. SMH.

I haven’t found many conspiracies that ended up being false. Like most, I don’t do the research because you’ll get mock for what you find. Head in the sand is easier and more socially acceptable.
However, unlike you, I commend the people that are trying to spread awareness. Truth is 100% always stranger than fiction.

My favorites are the bigfoot and black mountain lion people on Facebook.

The worst are the podcasters. Give them a hanging microphone, mixing board, and camera. Poof. They know everything.

Not necessarily. I've actually found that Occam's razor applies way more often than it doesn't.
People like to believe that they are living in the center of intrigue and mystery. That these are exceptional times.
It's uncomfortable for people to face the reality that they're just an incredibly insignificant entity living a mundane life, in an unremarkable time.
ETA:
"Your heart's desire is to be told some mystery. The mystery is that there is no mystery."
"The man who believes that the secrets of the world are forever hidden lives in mystery and fear. Superstition will drag him down."

Really? You believe the secret nazi base in Antarctica and Lizard people are running the country?
The problem with the modern conspiracy theorists are they don't need any proof or they can take a tiny grain of something like a Google maps picture of Antarctica and built a whole theory around it that people will jump on and believe as if it's the true story. Not even just a possibility, they take it as gospel.

Well there are certainly those who are TRYING to manipulate the weather. Many patents have been applied for. How successful they have been so far, I don’t know.
This is just a few of the patents.

Yup.
And he gravitates to the majority of conspiracy theories as true…….that waxes poetic in this thread.

Its where younger generations get their worldview from.
No wonder..
No wonder..

Since the Digital News Report began tracking respondents’ main source of news, social networks have steadily replaced news websites as a primary source for younger audiences overall, with 39% of social natives (18–24s) across 12 markets now using social media as their main source of news, compared with 34% who prefer to go direct to a news website or app. We also find that social natives are far more likely to access news using ‘side-door’ sources such as social media, aggregator sites, and search engines than older groups.

One huge issue I have is the misinformation spread on the health/nutrition/medical fronts. You have people peddling fricking danger…..

The "Real news" is still running with Russian collusion based on some piss tape.
Everyone is a conspiracy theorist, some conspiracies are just more socially acceptable than others.

Well what do you expect, when we have the government pushing out all kind of lies, and the MSM repeating the lies.

Indeed.
There are no trustworthy sources. The governments attempt to fight free speech has created an independent market for news.
The "black market" news isnt any more false than the real news. Just varying degrees of bias.

Wait until you meet the “birds aren’t real” folks

This is the main problem and the way covid was handled has grown conspiracy theories believability exponentially
