NFL (National Field-goal League) Field Goals are ruining the game

It's way past time for the NFL (National Field Goal League) to do something about the field goal. Another week of ho-hum 50-plus field goals. They not only are the most boring of plays but they rob the league of many great plays, the 4th down possession play. The first fix has to narrow the goal post. Fifty (50) plus field goals are commonplace, by narrowing the post would create more 4th down possession plays and inject more excitement instead of robbing fans of the passion for tackle football. They are there to see tackle football, not soccer. Another of my gripes is the plethora of game winning field-goals. Because of the ease which produce 3 points by field goal, many games are won by the field goal in the last minutes, this needs to end. Last year, there was one week where there were five (5) game-winning field goals. Think of that, a tackle football game won on a soccer play? This is ludicrous. At some point in time, maybe the 2-minute warning, field goals should be forbidden. A touchdown produced by tackle football should be only play to win or lose a football game. Soccer should never win or lose a tackle football game.

Kicking is part of the game. If the teams are evenly matched, then the team with the better kicker/special teams usually prevails.

Special teams is an equal part of the 3 parts of the game. They have gotten better as of late. This post is like NBA fans whining about the 3 point shot or football fans whining about the forward pass a hundred years ago.

I do think we are less than two years away from the field goal being raised and thinned.

The NFL is trying to reduce the violent impacts. Get rid of the current model in which a late FG decides the game, then you have MORE violent contact as the contestants vie for that final TD.
IMHO, the NFL is not going to change the current model. They like it very much.

FGM %s used to be around 50-60% 50 years ago. Other than moving the FG post behind the EZ nothing else has changed in regards to FGs. Kickers are now making FGs at >90% rate due to the specialization. If the game is going to adapt they need to narrow the goalposts like they have in arena football.

And passing stats were less than 1/2 what they are now 50 years ago. Want to require 4 steps down for a completion or require a fullback behind the qb? The game changes and so do statistics. I'm not completely opposed to slightly narrowing the goalposts, but limit the overreaction.

Starting kickoff touchbacks on the 30 when all kickers are almost automatic from 50+ and absurdly good from 55-60 is also a problem for the league. So many games just end up becoming who has the ball last…you can almost see the green “line to gain” for the field goal in the camera view when the team is starting on the 30
One twist I saw that would solve this is to actually make longer field goals worth less to prioritize and reward teams moving the ball down field
Something like:
20 yard or less FG = 3 points
20-40 = 2 points
50+ = 1 point
This would lead to so much more strategy with teams trying to move the ball, go for it on 4th, etc.

Could be fun if they required the player kicking to be an offensive or defensive starter. I know it’s not realistic but antispecialization could be interesting.

Perfect field surfaces and more indoor games have been the biggest changes.
3 tons of human beat the heck out of each other for three hours and then the smallest guy in a uniform decides the winner.

So basically you are going to punish a position because they have figured out a way to excel at it.

I just want to know why are kickers so much better than even 5 years ago. WTF changed? I'm not even shocked by a 55 yard FG anymore. I also think it's strange that kicking FG's is harder in college than the NFL because of the wider hash marks can make angles tough.

Coaching. My son has had a professional kicking coach since the 8th grade. That didn’t exist just 6 or 8 yrs ago.

Easier to just move it back to the 20

Kicking has been part of tackle football since before the forward pass was invented. You losing money gambling is no reason to fundamentally change the game.

This makes absolutely no sense.
So because something was less common 50 years ago, we need to adapt the rules to get it back to those levels and make it not as common again?
Do they also need to adapt rules to get passing yardage back down to the levels that they were 50 years ago and make those numbers less common again?
