Did You/ Do You Smoke Cigarettes?

How many of you smoke? If you used to, how were you able to quit? I’m not a smoker, but know a few who did and do, including my Dad who was a heavy smoker.
It sucks that people smoke despite knowing the risks (no offense to those who do). For a long time, my Dad smoked 2 to 3 packs a day. He tried to cut down a bit towards the end of his life, but the damage was done and he died from a massive heart attack.
So, for those who did manage to quit, what got you over the hump?

My mom smoked for over 50 years and finally quit in her seventies. She avoided cancer and COPD but smoking was a major contributor to the vascular dementia that eventually took her life.

I ripped darts from 1995-2013.
It was a glorious time. Glad I quit though.

I’ve smoked three packs of cigarettes a day since I was five. That’s how we do it here in the Philippines.

I smoked from about age 15-33 or so. Quit using nicotine gum when the kids were younger.
I still chew it actually, but I don't smoke anymore

43 years old and I never tried a single cigarette. Same for weed and/or any kind of drug.

I finally really quit a month before my son was born.
Prior to this my wife and I had both “quit” a few years earlier. She really quit, I would smoke whenever she wasn’t around, (football games, hunting/fishing) I was at the camp and realized I’d have someone I would need to be an example to coming in short order. I thought it would be a bad precedent to create a situation where I may feel the need to say “Now don’t tell your mother about this”.
So it was thinking in terms of what I wanted my son to think about me that made it easier to stick with quitting. It will be ten years this November. No dip, no camels, no cigars, nothing.

What risk? Looking too cool?

I smoked for 20+ years. I stopped when realized that the reason I smoked was from a death wish- a minor but persistent desire to die. Once I realized that and admitted it to myself I stopped and never got cravings ever again.

Smoked on and off from 1985 until April of last year.
Saw a show about Eddie Van Halen on the tee-vee and quit immediately. Cold Turkey.
First couple of days were rough but everything's fine now.
I don't even partake in REAL Cuban cigars anymore.

Yeah, pack a day, quit last August. Smoked a few in social situations since then. I smoked 6 cigs on a back packing trip this past summer. Since then absolutely 0 even so I still crave em especially when I smell them.

Quit at age 50 and that will be 22 years ago in early November. Was close to 2 packs a day for many years and just quit cold turkey. Haven't had a single puff since and can never see me smoking again.

I smoke about a pack a month during football season
About 3 per day either during close LSU / Saints games or during stressful wagers

There is nothing finer than standing outside in the mornings looking over the pasture before the fog burns off...and burning a cigarette.
Having said that... It's been a few months. I smoke about 2 packs a year.

I loved smoking. Quit about 15 years ago but still miss a dart around a good fire
Started to quit when my first kid was born and finally completely quit when my second was born.

I went on a guided mountaineering trip several years ago. The first night after setting up camp the guide fired up a cig. He said it helps with altitude sickness. Seems counterproductive but that was his reasoning.

Saw the last 12 years of my mom’s life ruined by emphysema & COPD from smoking. The last few months watching her literally begging for a breath was brutal. Breaks my heart whenever I see a young girl smoking.
