That was a pretty shitty move. They can hide behind the fact that he was less than stellar, but they 100% did this to save $200k.

His salary is $3.2 million. Cutting a dude for what amounts to a 6.25% bonus is a shitty move.

They will never ever get a pitcher of Skenes skill at his price again. His salary was 560K this year. He can go to more arbitration next year. He won’t make the big bucks until 2029.
